Chevrolet El Camino Starter Problem

I have replaced the battery, alternator, radiator, hoses, belts, plugs, wires, distributor cap. im having to tap the starter to start it. some mechanic at the dealership says if the heat shield is removed the starter heats up and will not run. the problem still exists when its cold. im replacing the starter today.

If you have to tap the starter for it to work, chances are the armature inside or the brushes are bad in the starter. Let me know if the new one fixes the problem.
