1984 BMW 528e Repair Question

1984 BMW 528E Engine issues?
1984 bmw 528e started to lose power on the way home. Engine noise got very loud, and lots of visible smoke within one mile. Stalled out, will start but engine is loud, lots of smoke, and won't run for more than roughly 3 seconds or so.

Engine check light on? oil level ok? coolant level ok? this is sounding like a mechanical engine failure
