Well ive encountered yet ANOTHER carb problem. I went to start her up the other day and because it was sitting it lost the prime to the carb. Well when it finally got there it was just pouring the gas into the mouth of the carb to the point where it spit some back out because it was being flooded entirely. Even after I stopped trying to start it the gas was still just pouring into the mouth of the carb. And after I finally got it started and it stopped that, it would only run when the idle was set ridiculously high. Like it was starving of fuel. It goes from one extreme to the other. I might just have to invest in a good one.

Well I finally went and made her street legal. Has plates and registration, and 2 weeks to have it inspected. But it just developed this odd issue with the brakes. Anytime I even slightly touch the brake pedal the rear pass side tire instantly locks up. So the brakes are either on, or off. Any clue to what would cause this?

DOES YA KNOW HOW TO ADJUST DRUM BRAKES

AIN'T REAL HARD

SINCE YOU DID NOT INSTALL THE BRAKES INITIALLY

LETS CHECK TO SEE IF THEY ARE ASSEMBLED CORRECTLY 1ST, THIS COULD BE A PROBLEM, HOPING IT'S JUST NEEDING SOME ADJUSTING.I FEEL SURE MOM AND DAD WOULD CONCUR!

THIS IS SORTA "LAW"

WHEN YOU GET A SET OF SHOES---THERE ARE 4 OF THEM---2 ARE PRIMARY SHOES (SHORTER LININGS)---2 ARE SECONDARY SHOES (LONGER LININGS)

ONE PAIR OF EACH GOES ON EITHER SIDE

NOT.2 SHORTS ON ONE SIDE, AND 2 LONGS ON THE OTHER!

ALL OF THIS IS IMPORTANT. BUT. YOU CAN SCREW THIS UP TOO!

THE SHORTER SHOE LINING ALWAYS IS AT THE FRONT----THE LONGER IS AT THE REAR

IT DOES NOT MATTER WHICH SIDE OF THE JEEP---IF YOU HAVE DRUMS IN THE FRONT. ALWAYS THE PRIMARY (SHORTER) TO THE FRONT!---TO THE FRONT!--TO THE FRONT!

MY 1ST PIC---TO THE RIGHT IS THE FRONT OF MY JEEP

. THIS IS "WILLY" 1946 TECHNOLOGY----SEE HIS PRIMARY AND SECONDARY? PRIMARY TO THE FRONT!

LETS CHECK THIS MUCH OUT

LETS GRAB 2 CANS OF BRAKE CLEANER, REMOVE THE DRUM AND WASH DOWN EACH SIDE, STARTING AT THE TOP

TAKE ME SOME PICS (SEVERAL OF EACH SIDE, TOP, BOTTOM, AND EACH SIDE) I WANNA SEE 'EM TOO---A POST IT NOTE WITH "D" (DRIVER'S SIDE) "P" (PASSENGER SIDE) IN THE PICS FOR ID

LETS CLEAN THE DRUMS TOO AND TAKE PICS OF THEM ON THE INSIDE

LETS TRY TO USE THAT BIG YELLOW BALL IN THE SKY TO AID WITH THEM PICS. NOW SHADOWS. NO GLARE!

GONNA STRING YOU OUT A LITTLE AS WE CONTINUE TO INSPECT AND ADJUST THESE CORRECTLY----THESE ARE IMPORTANT, THEY SORTA STOP YOUR JEEP, AND YOU TOO!

REASON FOR STRINGING YOU ALONG NOW?

YES, YOU TAKE TOO LONG TO RESPOND, I AM STUCK TRYING TO "CRAP AN ANSWER" TO SOMEONE WHO OWNS A VEHICLE MADE BY "THE PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT YOU ACTION AT PEARL HARBOR"

I'D MUCH RATHER GET A CJ SQUARED AWAY!

(THE WHOLE REASON I STARTED ANSWERING HERE IN THE 1ST PLACE)

NO MORE EXCUSES. KEEP THE THREAD GOING!

I previously had the drums off, about 2 months ago. Dad, who works at the ford dealership had said they looked great and he couldn't see any issues. I will still take some pictures for ya maybe tonight or tomorrow night. I had swapped on that carb with the electronic feedback on it and it runs! The choke is all screwed up, and the idle streams are clogged so it stalls on an idle more than 10 seconds. But it drives! Got tired of playing carb swap so I jut put out the money and ordered a re-manufactured one last night. As well as new rotors and pads for the front brakes. There are 2 deep grooves on the inside of the rotors.

ROJ ON PROGRESS

THE GRABBING BRAKE MAY BE THE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY'S ARE PAIRED WRONG OR PRIMARY IS NOT TO THE FRONT....OR....BRAKES ASSEMBLED WRONG (WORST CASE)

BEST CASE---WE NEED TO ADJUST IT CORRECTLY

I'M GUESSING YOU DON'T HAVE POWER BRAKES, SO......WHEN ALL IS DONE RIGHT YOUR BRAKE PEDAL WILL ONLY SINK ABOUT A THIRD OF THE WAY DOWN OR LESS, WITH NORMAL "STOPPING PRESSURE"IF YOU REALLY STAND ON THEM, NOT MORE THAN HALF A PEDAL WILL BE USED

LETS TALK CARB

YOU REALLY OUTTA GET YOU A CARTER BBD FOR A 1979----FIND YOU A GREAT PROMO CODE ON THE NET (SEARCH PROMO CODES FOR ADVANCE AUTO) THEN BUY IT ONLINE, INSERT PROMO CODE AT "CHECK OUT"PICK THAT PUPPY UP AT YOUR LOCAL STORE IN A DAY OR TWO

"RICK" SAVED ABOUT $75.......WE DID NOT TURN HIS CORE IN, UNTIL IT WAS INSTALLED AND RUNNING (SOMETIMES YOU FORGET TO TRANSFER STUFF, LIKE YOUR AIR CLEANER BRACKET, IF YOU TURN IT IN WHEN YOU PICK UP THE REBUILT ONE, YOUR BRACKET MAY BE GONE FOREVER!)

I'LL HELP YOU LOOK FOR A GREAT PROMO CODE IF YOU WISH

THIS IS THE CARB YOU WANT

Well I've been busy after work everyday, mom and dad had 7 trees cut down out the yard but didn't pay for them to remove them. They only dropped them. So I've become one with the chainsaw the past few days. I'm thinkin maybe Monday morning I'll get out there and pop off the tires before work. Or Tuesday on my day off.

I ordered the 79 reman carter from rockauto. Com was a lot cheaper. $200 including the $50 core. Parts better be here soon. I got a big 4wheeling event this weeked coming up and I need the cj ready for it!

Will report back as soon as I get the drums off again.

THIS IS RICK'S '85

NOW WITH THE '79 CARB. AND A '79 PVC

THE SIDE BY SIDE SHOTS ARE OF MY "SPARE '79 BBD AND HIS OLD '85, BEING HE WAS SO IMPATIENT, I DID NOT GET THE SIDE BY SIDES WITH HIS NEW CARB. THE PIC W/ CARB IN HIS HAND ARE HIS OLD AND HIS NEW

HE WANTED TO KEEP HIS 12V HEATED CHOKE (WHICH, UNTIL WE TEST THE WIRES, I DON'T THINK THERE IS POWER TO IT)

I LIKE HAVING A MANUAL CHOKE--YOU CAN SEE THE LINKAGE ON MY '79 BBD IN THE PICS WITH HIS '85. IT WAS NOT ON MY JEEP VERY LONG BEFORE I GOT THE OFFY INTAKE AND 390 CFM HOLLEY

AFTER TIMING AND TUNING (IDLE MIX SCREWS)--FIXIN' VAC LEAKS, REMOVING SOME OF THE CRAP

WE HAD THIS THING PURRING LIKE A KITTEN AT 300 RPM!

AFTER IT WAS ALL TUNED--WE HAVE THE DISTRIBUTOR HOOKED TO "MANIFOLD VACUUM". NOT PORTED VACUUM. IDLE STAYS SET TO 680 RPM (BOOK VALUE AND DON'T RUN WELL "COLD", MUCH LOWER THAN THAT)

JEALOUS?

WE'LL GET YOU THERE!

Okay I have a few questions for ya. In the pic of the new/old carb; did all the vacuum ports with the red caps on them remain capped after installation? We're any of them hooked up to something?

Where do you have the distributor advance vacuum line hooked up to?

Next, where does the PCV valve hose lead to?

And lastly, where does the hose that is shaped like a goofy T right above the fuel inlet on the carb go to?

Yes, very jealous. But I'm so close I can taste it! It's going to be a beauty. Thanks for all your help

Okay medic. My baby made it through the weekend of 4wheeling! The reman carb came saturday so I swapped it on sunday morning. Ever since than, it seems to laugh at me and fall flat on its face when try to get moving from a stop, unless I give it almost full throttle. I got an idea, but wanted to see your opinion also. My idea is that the mixture is too lean or such, so that when I try to use the engine under the load of driving it just cant do it? Maybe? Im not sure. Other than that shes doing just fine!

USE A VOLTMETER OR TEST LIGHT IN YOUR FUSE BLOCK

SEVERAL "SPADES" OR "FEMALES" ARE IN THERE AND UNUSED (SOME ARE FUSED)

YOU'LL TURN THE KEY ON AND OFF, AS YOU SEARCH, THIS WILL HELP YOU FIND THE ONE YOU WANT TO USE

CRIMP YOU A FEMALE "STAKE-ON" (OR MALE) END ON A 14 OR 16 GAUGE WIRE (THIS IS PROBABLY OVERKILL) STICK IT ON THE SPADE IN THE FUSE BLOCK, FIND A HOLE IN THE FIREWALL (PROTECT THE WIRE WITH A SMALL PIECE OF VACUUM LINE, OR A RUBBER GROMMET, AS IT GOES THRU THE FIREWALL)

PUT A FEMALE STAKE-ON ON THE CHOKE END. YOU'RE DONE!

EVERY NOW AND AGAIN, OVER TIME, CHECK THE CHOKE FOR POWER, WITH YOUR VOLTMETER AND THE KEY ON, JUST TO INSURE A FUSE HAS NOT BLOWN OR THE FEMALE AIN'T COME OFF OF THE SPADE IN THE FUSE BLOCK

THIS WILL KEEP THE WIRE SHORT

NOT INTERFERE WITH IGNITION, ETC---AS FAR AS OVERLOADING AN ALREADY USED CIRCUIT

IF THE "SPADE" HAS A FUSE PROTECTING IT, THAT WILL BE GOOD TOO!

IF YOUR CHOKE WIRE IS NOT FUSE PROTECTED, YOU CAN DO THIS WITH 2 FEMALE STAKE-ONS AND I'D TRY A 15 AMP FUSE

KEEP THE FUSE INCHES FROM THE FUSE BOX SO THAT MOST OF THE ENTIRE WIRE IS FUSE PROTECTED, AND CAN BE SEEN WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE FUSES IN THE BOX. IT'D BE SORTA DUMB TO PUT THE FUSE OUT THERE AT THE CHOKE, WHERE ONLY 2 INCHES OF THE WIRE IS PROTECTED

DISREGARD WHAT THE PIC I PROVIDE IS DOING (IT'S A TEST FOR ANOTHER PROBLEM), JUST LOOK AT HOW THE FUSE IS IN THE LINE

LOOK FEASIBLE?

Well my baby went through inspection and passes. But she's been sick ever since they raped her. I swear she just got mad when they stuck their little tool up her tailpipe. It won't keep and idle, unless it's a high idle. Almost like its starvin of fuel. But it's got a full tank, it does have gas to the carb. So I guess it's tuning the carb? Adjusting the idle. I hooked up the tach and its idle was set at about 450rpm. So I cranked it up a bit around 750 and it ran better but stalled after about 15 seconds. I have some more pics but I can't do it over my phone so I'll post them later.
