I have an 80ish cj7 I've owned a 7 since 1991, mine was flooded in katrina in 2005, bought this one to replace her in 2006 and it has some issues patched and mismatched together by previous owner-recently I began having starter issues finally got it resolved-dont really know what fixed it exactly but its or was starting. I was attempting to start it to move it, and its been a few weeks so it takes a couple tries to start. Well I pumped the pedal and was turning over when sounded like battery getting low (i only try a few seconds at a time dont want to burn up starter and usually cranks after a couple tries and some pedal pumping)so I stopped for a few seconds then turned key to try to start and NOTHING no click, no lights, headlights wont come on, nada, volt meter doesnt move its completely dead. I have had this problem once before and a mechanic friend of mine did something under dash and pow started working again-i have no idea what he did but it only took a minute. As a note the key is broken in the lock-but its been like that. I did put the other half into ignition in case that was it but it didnt make a difference. It was turning over fine and then zip like a switch shut off. I just replaced my negative cable about a month ago it was bad-all connections look good-i wiggled and tugged coil wires, starter wires and solenoid they all look fine. Its been very cold here 20's at night so I have since charged battery with a charger, and retried and still zip, headlights wont come on and no power any where. Its a new starter new coil new solenoid-new carb too its just kind of finicky I guess needs adjusting when I first put it on didnt need to pump at all. So any suggestions? Thanx for your time Rita Adams Bay st. Louis ms

That was a nice description!

I answer a lot of the CJ stuff, bear with my style, you can investigate the CJ 5 & 7 Forums and see, I will help all I can!

1st lets give the Carb a shot of STARTER FLUID (Just a Squirt or two), See what it does, IS IT TRYING?

Pull a Plug wire, stick a nail in beside the metal piece (in the plug boot) hold it about a 1/4 of an inch from the metal on the engine, turn it over a DO YOU HAVE A GOOD POPPING SPARK?

Do this even if you have to be jumped.

We will investigate your other issues as we go

Just do the things I said, I will explain anything better, if you want

I need results, Not Excuses!

Waitin' on you!

This will save me MEGA hunting and pecking

The MAJORITY OF THE FOLLOWING POST WAS MADE FOR A CJ WITH STARTING PROBLEMS!!!

I CAN SEE NO REASON THIS SHOULD NOT EXPLAIN WHAT VOLTAGE VALUES SHOULD BE WHERE, IN YOUR STARTING SYSTEM----SO IT CAN BE DIAGNOSED CORRECTLY IF THEY ARE NOT PRESENT

AGAIN, IF YOU ARE A "ROCK", I CAN GET YOU THRU THIS!!!

I'm here, I hopefully can assist you, in getting it going!

Thank goodness, CJs seldom need help!.........My answers are really "Deep and Personal".....I would kill myself hunting and pecking my "Novels", if they came any faster!!!

I am presently assisting one other feller, it's turning out to be a Ongoing, Really Informative Post!

Like I said, "ONGOING" if you would like to sorta keep track, and maybe get some info you did not know, Here's the Link, sit back and watch as it progresses, if you'd like to!!!.....His is a V-8 (304) a lot of the processes are the same as a 6 cylinder!

Here's his 1st question

Here's his second (still going)

Hey good news-I feel like an idiot though. After tidying a couple wires(poor connects, dirty etc), tried jumping the solenoid and zip checked battery volts read 12.9, sooo tried another battery voila, with a little squirt start fluid she cranked. Thanks for your help I will keep an eye on the other guys thread to see what I can learn - I still have little issues priimarily with wiring(from the previous owner) that I will work through. BTW my current everyday driver is a 98 yukon with 280,000 and my previous car a 3000gt lost to katrina had 276,000. I saw the miles on yours so thought you might appreciate
