Grounding problem?

I changed out the alternator on my 924. Originally, I forgot to connect the ground. After idling for about 10-15 minutes, the idle seemed to speed up, but then went dead with no response afterward when trying to crank, not even the scelenoid. I connected the ground and assuming the battery was completely discharged, I charged it for 24 hours. Now, when trying to connect the battery cables to the terminals, no matter which cable you connect first, the moment you try to connect the second cable, it starts to fry the terminal. I'm thinking it's some kind of grounding issue, but I really don't know what's causing it. Any ideas?
