NEED HELP GETTING MY STARTED. DONT KNOW WHERE TO START ON THE TROUBLESHOOTING

1978 Jeep CJ7

I just bought a 1978 cj7 and I dont know where to start on the troubleshooting. This is my first jeep and I hope it will be a enjoyable experience. The battery is good. I put gas in the carb and jumped the solenoid. The fan in the front of the jeep spun but did not sound like it was wanting to start the engine. When I turn the key, nothing happens. I have no idea where to start or what to begin on. Help would be greatly appreciated.

YEAH, "WILLY" WAS A "2"

EVERYTHING WAS THERE, EXCEPT FOR THE RR BRAKE DRUM!

PICS ARE DECEIVING, WHEN WE TRAILER-ED HIM HOME, I TOOK THE STEERING GEAR LOOSE (COLUMN IS PART OF IT, ALL SORTA 1 PC) THEN WITH A CROW BAR AT MAYBE 4 POINTS, WE SNATCHED THE WHOLE BODY OFF IN 10 MINUTES FLAT.

THERE WAS ABOUT A 55 GALLON DRUM OF BOND-O HOLDING IT ALL TOGETHER----AND WE FOUND LEAD REPAIRS TOO (THE OLD WAY!)

I KNEW THE BODY WOULD NOT MAKE THE CUT, JUST TOO FAR GONE, I COULDA SPENT $5000 JUST TO ATTEMPT TO SAVE THE BODY! (JOKING, BUT REALLY, I WOULD HAVE SPENT FOREVER!)

I DID SALVAGE THE 2 PC WINDSHIELD--INSTALLED NEW GLASS

AT THE TIME, A WHOLE NEW STEEL BODY WAS ABOUT $3500 (MIGHT AS WELL HAVE BEEN $10,000!)

I CALLED A COMPANY CALLED T.J. VANDERBOSCH, AFTER I GOT A LEAD FROM SOMEONE SELLING THEIR BODIES. REMEMBER, IN THE EARLY '90s, WE HAD THE "INTER-YELLOW PAGES" AND 99% LAND-LINES!

I MAY HAVE SPENT A FORTUNE, JUST ON THE PHONE, THANK GOODNESS FOR 800 NUMBERS!

THEY WERE REALLY COOL, AND WITH MUCH WHINING, AND SPEAKING TO ANOTHER PARATROOPER THERE(ONCE A RANGER AND PARATROOPER, ALWAYS ONE!), I WHEELED A GOOD DEAL ON A COMPLETE FIBERGLASS BODY FOR $950.I SENT THE HOOD BACK TWICE, AS IT HAD A BIG DIP IN THE CENTER, 3RD TIME IT CAME BACK REINFORCED WELL, AND I WAS HAPPY!

STILL HAS NOT RUSTED AFTER ALL OF THIS TIME!

WHEN I SAW "WILLY" FOR THE 1ST TIME, HE LOOKED LIKE THE LAST 3 PICS ABOVE. NO ONE ELSE COULD SEE HIM THAT WAY. EXCEPT. THE WHOLE TIME ME AND MY 2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER, NURSED HIM BACK TO HEALTH, WE BOTH HAD THE SAME VISION.I HAD 2 ARMY JEEP MODELS, BUILT WHEN I WAS A "LITTLE KID". THEY WERE OUR INSPIRATION.

IF YOUR FUEL LINES WERE OFF, THERE MAY BE DIRT DAUBERS IN THE LINES, IF IT WERE ME, I'D TAKE LOOSE THE RUBBER LINES, AND MAYBE RUN SOME 'LECTRIC FENCE WIRE THRU THE STEEL LINES.

LOOK FOR KINKS, AND REPLACE THE RUBBER LINES.

IF YOU CAN JUST GET IT FLOWING, THE DAUBER NESTS WILL EVENTUALLY BREAK AWAY. YOUR FUEL FILTER SHOULD CATCH IT. IF YOU WANT, INSTALL A CHEAP, CLEAR "IN" AND "OUT" IN THE LINE, PRIOR TO YOUR CORRECT 3 N. IPPLE FILTER, SO YOU CAN SEE WHEN IT'S FULL OF CRAP

ARE YOUR FUEL LINES, AND FILTER SET UP LIKE MINE, WITH A RETURN LINE IN THE PICS?

IF SO, YOUR REMOTE FUEL CAN WILL GO DRY FAST! THE RETURN LINE WILL DUMP BACK INTO THE TANK, NOT IN YOUR REMOTE FUEL CAN!

MESSAGE INFO IS STILL IN EFFECT THIS EVENING TOO!

Interesting history on your jeep. I just bought mine from my girlfriends dad for 700 bucks. He said he drove it about 2 years ago then began to fix it and never continued. Has alot of rust which will eventually be a big problem. I will cross that bridge when I have to get there. The jeep has 5 brand new tires on it. I figured that if I couldnt get it runnin, I could always sell the tires for more than I paid for it.

My first plan is to make sure my fuel pump is still functional. Its weird that it worked last week then stopped. I was really hoping to get some time today to work on it but that didnt happen. So I will let you know how it goes when I do get the time. After I make sure my fuel pump is good, I will try your idea with cleaning out my lines.

Yes I do have a return line similar to how yours is set up. I do not have the pressure gauge set up like you do though.

GAUGE IS COOL! AND FUNCTIONAL BUT NOT NECESSARY, FOR STOCK STUFF.I GOT IT TO KEEP THE RECOMMENDED PRESSURE INTO MY HOLLEY 390. GOT THE GAUGE AT AUTOZONE LESS THAN $20, COMES WITH A PLASTIC TEE, I MADE A BRASS TEE FOR MINE, I SOLDERED A 1/8 FEMALE FITTING TO A "BARBED TEE"

I JUST FLOODED YOU WITH A BUNCH OF WM ALBUMS. LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU FINISH THEM, I HAVE A FEW MORE TO SEND!

I will check out the albums after I send this message.

Update on Jeep: I removed the incoming fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump and attempted to blow through it, nothing. I could blow through the return line to the tank. My Uncle (Todd) could feel air coming out of the gas tank at the gas cap. But could feel nothing when I blew through the main line. Clogged Possibly.

Second trial - I hooked a temp line to my fuel pump and ran it to a gas can. Took the fuel line off of the fuel filter so that I could see if gas was flowing through the pump or not. Nothing.

Since my fuel pump was pumping gas, is it possible that my fuel pump could be clogged up? Or maybe it just went bad? I dont think they are very expensive so I may just buy a new one.
Attached is a picture of the fuel pump hooked up. It is very so possible that I hooked it up wrong. Was not sure which was incoming and which was outgoing so I tried to go with the most common sense way. Ha

The red line is to the temp fuel can and the black goes to my fuel filter. Could be switched?

Let me know what you think.

I will check out those albums now.

DANG IT!....YOU ARE GONNA SCRATCH THE FENDERS!

LOOKS RIGHT

THE STRAIGHT UP ONE, WITH FUEL LINE THREADS GOES TO THE FILTER, AND ON TO THE CARB

ARE YOU PUMPING BY HAND OR ON THE VEHICLE? BY HAND? YOU GOTTA PUSH HARD!---EZer ON THE ENGINE

NEW, WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA---I KEEP A SPARE FUEL PUMP/ COIL/ IGNITION MODULE IN MINE....EVER SINCE, I HAVE NOT NEEDED THEM...THE PUMP AND IGNITION MODULE HAS BEEN NEEDED WHEN I CAME ACROSS 2 OTHER FELLERS LIKE YOU!.....THEY BOTH WERE SURPRISED THAT I HAD THE SPARES ON HAND, AND WAS ABLE TO INSTALL ON THE ROAD SIDE!.....SHOULD SEE MY STUFF IN THE ALBUMS

Yes I did get your message. I am always on the run and barely have time to relax. So unless Im working on my jeep late into the evening and have a immediate problem, I probably wont get a chance to call. But will defiantly keep your number just in case. 24 bucks for a new fuel pump is not bad at all. I will pick one up tomorrow and see how that works.

I live in Tampa, Fl. Actually in the city outskirts of tampa. Kinda in the country yet only about 15 from anywhere I wanna go. Its pretty nice.

That album was interesting. I dont plan on working on the heater/ac for a while. For now, it will be a bare bone hunting vehicle. Haha

So where were we at last time we talked. Fuel pump.
I replaced the fuel pump and hooked up a temp tank. Worked great. It pumped gas just how its supposed to. Put the return line to a smaller can and it began filling that tank quickly. Gas started pouring out of my carb. I began diagnosing the problem and my carb diaphragm is bad. Holes all inside of the rubber gasket part of the diaphragm. Picked up a carb repair kit for advanced auto parts for 32 bucks : ) It had a good amount of gaskets in the carb. Not sure if ill replace all of them now or just wait a little while.

Also, my alternator was squealing real bad.I think the bearings went bad in it. I bought a new one for 50 bucks with a 10 dollar core charge.

Todd had a $20 off a 100$ purchase so that worked out nicely : )

Gonna try to work on it some tomorrow evening. Not sure if Ill get time or not. I began removing the bolts for my alternator but those things are TIGHT. Sprayed some stuff on the bolts to loosen them up but still really tight. Any suggestions on that? Defiantly don't want to break those bolts.

MOST LIKELY THE OVERFLOW OF FUEL AT CARB IS THE FLOAT/ NEEDLE AND SEAT. ALL ARE CONNECTED!

FLOAT MAY BE STUCK OR ADJUSTED WRONG

NEEDLE TIP MAY BE DAMAGED OR GONE (TEENY-WEENY RUBBER POINT)

NEEDLE AND SEAT SHOULD BE REPLACED AS A SET

RUNNING A TEMPORARY RETURN BACK INTO YOUR "REMOTE FUEL CAN" WILL LET YOU USE THE FUEL, AS IT GETS RECYCLED BACK TO TO IT'S ORIGIN

I SENT YOU A WHOLE BUNCH OF ALBUMS, ALL DIFFERENT, DIFFERENT JEEP SYSTEMS, SOME THAT WILL HELP YOU. YOU DID GET 'EM ALL, OR JUST THE ONE ABOUT THE HEATER ACCESS PORTS?

MY BROTHER-IN-LAW GOT AN A/C COMPRESSOR FROM EITHER AUTOZONE OR ADVANCE AUTO, PAID FOR IT ON-LINE, HE SAVED OVER $100. THEN PICKED IT UP AT THE LOCAL STORE. HE WAS ALSO GIVEN AN ADDITIONAL $50 VOUCHER HE PRINTED OFF. NO CORE CHARGE.A LITTLE LOOKING AROUND CAN SAVE YOU A BUNDLE.I THINK HE FOUND THE DEAL BY GOOGLING "COUPONS OR DISCOUNTS ON-LINE" OR SOMETHING TO THAT EFFECT

IS YOUR EMISSIONS TESTED?

TO GET YOUR CARB TWEAKED OUT

I NEED TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU HAVE THAT RUNS ON VACUUM. PCV. PWR BRAKES. EGR. DISTRIBUTOR ADVANCE. ANYTHING ELSE. MAKE A LIST

OUR NEXT GOAL WILL BE TO ELIMINATE ALL VACUUM CRAP THAT IS NOT NECESSARY, REPLACING NASTIFIED VACUUM LINES, THUS ELIMINATING LEAKS

ON MY CJ EVERYTHING IS PLAIN JANE, MY EGR WAS ELIMINATED W/ MY 4 BBL INTAKE AND HEADERS.I HAVE A PCV SYSTEM. VAC ADVANCE TO THE DISTRIBUTOR. AND A VAC LINE TO A VAC GAUGE ON MY DASH (OPTIONAL). IN REALITY, IT ONLY TAKES 2 VACUUM LINES TO MAKE IT ALL HAPPEN!

I MAY BE ABLE TO HELP YOU CHOOSE WHAT NEEDS TO BE HOOKED TO WHERE, WITH YOUR LIST

ALL OF THE OTHER VACUUM PORTS WILL NEED TO BE CAPPED OFF ON THE CARB AND INTAKE MANIFOLD

. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE CARB BOWL VENTS. THEY ARE VENTS, NOT VACUUM. THEY MUST BREATHE! REMIND ME TO HARP ON THAT LATER!

CAPPING SHOULD BE DONE WITH PLASTIC (NYLON) CAPS, NORMALLY THEY ARE COLORED. RUBBER ONES (THICKER) WILL ROT AWAY, IN NO TIME. YOU WILL HAVE A VACUUM LEAK, RUN TERRIBLY AND NEVER THINK ABOUT THE CRAPPY RUBBER CAPS. ON THE "CHEAPO" END OF FIXIN', (WHICH IS FINE!) USE "FUEL LINE" (NOT VACUUM LINE, RUBBER) FUEL LINE IS REINFORCED, INSERT A SHORT, TIGHT FITTING BOLT OR SCREW IN IT, TO MAKE YOUR OWN CAPS, THAT WILL LAST.

WE'RE GONNA NEED A TIMING LIGHT, A DWELL/ TACH TO TUNE IT.

TILL WE GET TO IT. DO NOT TURN THE CARB SCREWS. ESPECIALLY DOWN TIGHT. THIS WILL RUIN YOUR CARB!

YOUR TURN
