We have a 1977 m880 dodge military pickup. When I turn the key, it starts immediately, but once the key is released, it dies. I'm thinking the ballast resistor is shot. Your thoughts?

Resistor was a real common problem. It is bypassed by the ignition switch during cranking to boost the lower battery voltage up while the starter is drawing it down. Check for voltage on both sides of it with the ignition switch in the "run" position. If voltage is missing on one side, replace it.
