1976 Datsun 210 Repair Question

My 76 b210 will only crank over when it has a fully charged battery and a jumper box hooked up. why

What are the symptoms when it doesn't crank? Do the head lights get dim or go out? Rapid clicking from the starter relay? Have you measured the battery voltage?
