Volkswagen Beetle Starter Problem

When i remove my starter motor from the vehicle and test it with a battery it works well. Then i put it in and it turns for approx two or three turns and then it sticks and the starter starts to get hot and i have to disconnect the battery. when i hit the starter with a hammer it comes loose from the flywheel..what could the problem be?

Try starting it by jumping the terminals on the starter while it is mounted to the transmission.... if it does not hang-up like that, then I would suspect the ignition switch.

Remove the ignition switch wire from the starter to make sure it is not interfering.
