1973 Pontiac Catalina 400 backfiring through the carburetor

1973 Pontiac Catalina 400 mileage: 140,000. My car is backfiring through the carburetor. I have changed the timing chain and gears, the plug wires, plugs, rotor, distributor cap, points, set the timing, and cleaned my carburetor. After all of this it is noticeably better, but still has the backfire. What else is there to do or check?

Do a compression check; check for broken valve springs and for a “flat” cam.
