Cooling system

I just changed the water pump on my 1969 Chevy C10 307 CID engine. Bled the system, refilled the radiator, cranked up and ran until temp went higher than 2/3's on the temp gauge. Upper hose and radiator are cool to touch. Lower hose is warm to hot to the touch. Radiator pressure is good. Why so quick to get hot temp reading?
