1964 Mercury Comet Repair Question

64 mercury comet replaced alternator and switched over the regulator from mechanical to electric pulled the positive cable and it still died???
Alternator wont charge battery i did a switch over on the charging from generator and mechanical voltage regulator

Replace the parts with the original type.
