MORE: Volkswagen Rabbit Repair Questions

Question:  1994 Volkswagen Rabbit  mileage: 136,000.  I was trying to repair the front wheel bearings on the driver’s side and it got stuck.  After I removed the hub nut and brake calipers, I tried to remove the rest of the hub assembly to access the bearings.  I tried using a puller to remove the assembly and all that did was push the axle spindle (not sure of the name) off the wheel instead of pulling off the hub assembly.

Answer:  The tool you need to remove the hub is called a “slide hammer.”

Question:  1993 Volkswagen Rabbit.  I recently ran out of gas on a hill. I put gas in and it still would not start.  Had car towed to home, tried on level ground.  Did not start.  In other cars if you run out of gas, you can prime the carburetor and it will start.  My problem is this has no carburetor.  It is fuel injected.  Do you know where the fuel filter is located so I can try replacing that?  Or do you have any suggestions?  I need to get to work on Monday.  Thank you in advance if you have a reply.

Answer:    Try turning the key off and on a few times with out cranking the engine.  This should cycle the fuel pump and get fuel up to the engine.  Hopefully this will get you to work.

Question:  1992 VW Rabbit  mileage: 152,000. This is gonna sound pretty stupid, but I took my car apart 3 months ago to remove the alternator. Had to get the AC out of the way first. Okay, here's the stupid part, I can't figure out the belt and pulley system. I've got the one (one? really? were there two originally? dunno.) belt & it doesn't seem to be long enough to go around the pulleys. I have a Haynes manual, & it doesn't even help. I'm an idiot. Help!!!

Answer:  I You can download the wiring and belt diagrams from a program called shop key. For a small fee you can have unlimited access to all the diagrams for your model car for a week a month or a year. It will depend which program fits your car repair project. The Mitchell CD ROM is a great resource too.
