Golf Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1996 Volkswagen Golf
mileage: 125,000. I was pulling out from a parking space.
Suddenly the driving wheel was locked and I cannot turn
it. The driving wheel has always been hard to turn. A
garage said that I will have to replace the rack (rack
and pinion?), which is very expensive, and do wheel
alignment. What is the problem? Is the garage's
recommendation justified?
Answer: It sounds as if the steering
rack does need to be replaced.
Question:
1997 VW Golf K2 4 cylinder mileage: 127,000.
Something is wrong with my alarm system. It is
activated all the time now -- and I cannot lock from the
inside using the toggle button on the dashboard.
Is there something that I can do to deactivate this
alarm system or do I need to bring it into the
dealer/repair shop?
Answer:
The alarm system is an integral part of your car and
cannot be deactivated. A dealer or an independent
service center should be able to fix your problem.
Question:
1996 Volkswagen golf 2.0 mileage: 60,000. Ok, here
goes. I have a 1996 VW Golf 2.0 auto. When I put
the keys in the ignition switch, the LCD on the TAC
gauges shows the car in drive, but it is in park.
Then when I try to start the car, nothing happens.
No clicking sound, nothing. There is a slight
clicking sound in the center console though. I
checked the battery, and it has a strong charge.
It has been very cold here for the last week. I
did move the gear lever back and forth, and it did start
once, and I let the car run for about 15 minutes to warm
up. When I tried to start it again, nothing.
And the gearshift trick didn’t work. Help!
Answer:
From what you have described, the gear shirt selector
switch needs to be replaced.
Question:
1995 VW Golf mileage: 133,000. What is the
Torque for cylinder head bolts?
Answer:
A Mitchell or Chilton auto repair manual will have
diagrams showing torque values and sequence. The
manuals also give step-by-step instructions.

Question:
1994 VW Golf mileage: 150,000 I am
experiencing a problem with the warm up phase. The
engine will increase to 2500-3000 revs as it warms up.
It will then stay at this level for anything up to 30
minutes and then drop back to normal (suddenly).
For no apparent recent the engine will now and again
suddenly start racing again only to drop back to normal
just as suddenly. Any ideas? I wonder if the
culprit is the Stage II vacuum delay. If you have
no probable solution, I would be happy with a list of
the units or components that could be responsible.
Answer: It sounds like the the thermo time
switch for cold start injector, fuel injection
temperature sensor or the idle stabilizer.
