Eurovan Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1993 Volkswagen Eurovan
mileage: 155,000 It has a problem with repeated air
conditioning compressor freeze ups. It gets burnt then
makes the serpentine belt snap rendering the van without
alternator and power steering or brakes. It has been
repaired four times and nobody can do it correctly. Can
you help?
Answer: The expansion valve may be
malfunctioning causing high pressure in the air
conditioning system. This results in overworking of the
compressor. Also, check the cooling fans for the
condenser. If those are not working, that will also
cause a high-pressure situation.
Question:
1993 Volkswagen Eurovan GL mileage: 102,000.
Van would stall when I first started in the morning or
whenever it would sit for a while. Last Friday I
was stopped at stop sign and when I went to put my foot
on gas it stalled out and would not start. It
would turn over but it sounded like it was not getting
gas to the engine. Could it be a fuel pump
problem? In addition, for the last few months, I
can smell gasoline. Had a tune up at VW dealership
and they said I had a small fuel leak (I had that
repaired a year ago to the month) not to worry about it
for now. What could be the problem: fuel pump?
Answer:
Yes, your problem could be the fuel pump. In
addition, your car is equipped with a computer
controlled engine management system. An
independent auto service center can scan your computer
for fault or error codes. The information should
pinpoint the malfunctioning components.
Question: Transmission problem 1984 Volkswagen
Eurovan 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 234K miles When shifting into 1st or 2nd
gear the vehicle will not respond.............
When shifting into 3rd or 4th gear the
transmission is active and works. Reverse is active. The new
clutch has only 30k miles.
What could cause the problem and can it be repaired ? Are
transmission
parts still available for a vehicle this age. Would fixiing
this problem be expensive......
Please advise.... Thank you, Thomas Answer:
I would be checking the gear change linkage's.
To loose 1st & 2nd and the rest ok is a bit strange. Make sure that the linkages
are ok before removing the gear box.
