Toyota Tacoma Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 2002 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner  mileage: 9,000: Since day one, my automatic transmission "thumps" when down-shifting just before coming to a stop. If it does not thump when coming to a stop, it will do it when taking off from a stop. Tends to start doing this when normal engine temp is reached. Dealer says that it is no problem and that some trucks do this. Dealer says that they tried adding lubrication to the prop shaft joints to help lessen the thump. Dealer says that the Toyota Sequoia does the same thing. Is there a solution or is this just a quirk of these models?

Answer: It may be coming from a slip joint on the drive shaft. As you are stopping, it tends to pull the joint apart and as you start accelerating it pushes it back together. If it is sticky or lacks lubricant, it has a tendency to jump causing your thumping sound.

Question: 1995 Toyota Tacoma mileage: 70,000. My Seat belts in my truck won't roll up anymore and I have to do it manually. How can I fix this? I plan on keeping this truck probably 10 more years and would like to maintain it.

Answer: Unfortunately, the only fix is to replace the spring-loaded seat belt retractors. This is a dealer only item.

Question:  1999 Toyota Tacoma 4x4  mileage: 50,000.  Do you check A/T fluid with engine running or off, hot or cold?  The manual says nothing about checking AT fluid.

Answer:  Normally the fluid is checked with the engine running in park at operating temperature.  However, your transmission may be “sealed” with no dipstick.

Question:  1995 Toyota Tacoma  mileage: 60,000. Whenever I go to order parts they ask me what size engine 1.7 -2.4-2.7? I looked everywhere on the engine and I cannot find any of this numbers. Is it hidden somewhere?

Answer:  The information is located on the EPA - tune-up sticker under the hood, or near the motor. If you still cannot find it, call your local Toyota dealer and give him the Vin number and they should be able to tell you.
