Subaru Impreza Repair Questions and Answers

Question:  2003 Subaru Impreza 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Manual 104,000 miles. my 03 Subaru wrx has an upgraded turbo and fuel system but lately i can't boost past 5 psi or it will feel like it is retarded my timing, what do you think could cause this?

Answer:   Have you changed your BOV? If so, your MAF may be making your fuel/air mix to rich. A vented BOV will do that.

Question:  1995 Subaru Impreza Engine Size unknown Front Wheel Drive Manual 71000 miles, I can hear a noise from the front right wheel. Its only there when I accelerate. Its loud clunking noise. But becomes louder when turning right. What do you think could be the problem??

Answer:  Sounds like you have a CV joint going bad.

Question:
2006 Subaru Impreza 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 40,000 miles. My wife hit some bad ice last night and hit a curb with her passenger side, front tire. Looks like the tire is flat, and the rim is pretty scratched, but more importantly, it seems to have been pushed back a little, slightly touching the body. No impact damage to the body, from what I can tell, but the driver side front tire is straight. What might this indicate?

Answer: You have to get a look at ALL steering parts, especially the lower control arm, and mounting area on the car body...this is a doosie!

Question:  2005 Subaru Impreza 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Manual 22,300 miles. I need a new catalytic converter for my 05 wrx sti I was wondering if I could use the catalytic converter from the regular wrx to replace it...even though I think the pipe difference is a quarter inch

Answer:   If your year and mileage is correct it should still be covered under factory warranty for federal emissions. emissions is warranted longer that the factory bumper to bumper, you can call the dealer with your v.i.n. and they can verify.

Question:  1993 Subaru Impreza Engine Size unknown Four Wheel Drive Manual 119,000 miles. When I start the car it misfires and whitish grey smoke pours out of the exhaust and there is no power.

Answer: Sounds like you need to replace one of your head gaskets.

Question:  2002 Subaru Impreza 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 107,000 miles. Immediately after getting my timing belt changed my check engine light came on. I took it to a dealership and they said all four cylinders were misfiring. Could the timing belt be a notch or two off and that is causing the engine to misfire and run rough? The dealership did not replace the timing belt and my mechanic and the dealership are saying two different things.....

Answer: Remove the timing covers and have the timing marks checked for alignment, with that question answered and if you still have the miss fire, then we can start looking into other causes. But I would be proving the valve timing first.

Question:  1999 Subaru Impreza 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 150,000 miles. The fuel tank must be dropped to replace the vent valve, and the filler tube must be replaced due to rust. I was quoted: filler neck-------- $110
vent--------- $70, labor (5.5hrs x 80$/hr)-----$442 Is is an accurate estimate?

Answer:     A bit high in the hours should take no more then 4.5 hours.

Question:  2004 Subaru Impreza 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 120,000 miles Where do you recommend I purchase the long nose 45-90 degree pliers to remove the spark plug wire casing that broke around the spark plug.
This would be a very special very long nose plier and it would seem they would be hard to find. Please advise!

Answer: If you can't find it in a hardware store, try the Snap-On or Mac tool trucks, or websites...

Question:  2004 Subaru Impreza 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 120,000 miles what do you recommend to remove the broke in half spark plug wire casing around the plug still in the engine?

Answer: You can try grabbing it with a pair of long nose pliers you can get them in 45 & 90 Deg"s with extra reach, this will be a bit tricky as to the access of the plugs, take your time and you will get it off.

Question:  2002 Subaru Impreza 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Manual 73,000 miles. my Subie took an adventure over a median and apparently "mildly" bent the sub frame. the mechanic said it should be all right. he was able to re-align the steering. is this something I should worry about for future problems?

Answer: How much of a bend is this mild bent? if you notice huge differences by looking at it then no, if you cant tell by just glimpsing at it I wouldn't worry.
