Land Rover Repair Questions and Answers
Question: 1996 Land Rover Discovery 4.0L 8-cylinder mileage: 60,000.
When my vehicle has been sitting cold for 8+ hours, it starts beautifully and immediately.
However, if I try to start it 15 minutes to 3 hours after driving for awhile, it
has to turn over for a good 4 seconds before starting. I just had a major tune-up,
and the dealer "reset the performance memory" to try to fix this, but to no avail.
Could it be a fuel pump issue... perhaps some sort of relay that ties the fuel pump
to oil pressure that I've heard about?
Answer: What we would do is scan the computer data stream
and read the values of all the sensors, particularly the coolant temperature sensor.
We recommend a pocket scanner by Actron, they have 3 models to choose from. With
any one of these
Engine Scanners
you can read your own trouble codes and clear them too.
Question: 1995 Land Rover 620i
2.0 mileage: 72,000. A strong smell of anti-freeze in front & rear seating
area, which clears after heating has been on for five minutes but after engine has
stopped/parked smell, comes back. I have checked interior for leaks and underneath
car but no sign, also checked radiator/cooling system/expansion tank/windscreen
tank all of which appear fine.
Answer: Your heater
core has probably failed and is leaking coolant. Replacing the heater core
should fix your problem.
Question: 1989 Land Rover
mileage: 95,000. Intermittent (though increasing) problem of very slow turning
of engine. Sounds like failing battery but both battery and ignition ok.
Any ideas?
Answer: What you need to
do first is load test the battery. If it tests okay, around 300 amps, then
do a starter amp draw test; this should be no more than 200 amps. If the starter
draws more than 200 amps, it should be replaced.
Question: 1975 P6 Rover 2200
mileage: 67,000. If you were to try to start the car the sound would suggest
a flat battery. All of a sudden, it would spring to life. The starter motor
has been professionally overhauled and there is an extra earth lead between engine
and body. Once started it goes 15 miles (fast dual carriageway) and then 8
hours later we do it all again. Any advice would be appreciated.
Answer: Here are
some things to check. Load test the battery. Check that the battery
cable connections are clean. Check for 12 volts to starter solenoid with the
key in the start position. These things should be checked first then the ignition
switch, starter and starter solenoid. One of these may be faulty.
