MORE: Pontiac Lemans Repair Questions

Question: 1991 Pontiac Lemans  mileage: 150,000. I recently had a car repair done. The timing chain had broken and the repairman went to test-drive the car after fixing the timing chain. The oil light had come on, the mechanic drove it without checking the oil, and the engine froze up after that. It now needs a new engine. I need to know if it was an error on the mechanics part. Is there anyone else that can advise me on what to do?

Answer: Your engine probably had a timing gear that had a gear with a heavy plastic coating on it. When the timing chain failed, it stripped all the plastic off the gear. The plastic pieces end up in the oil pan and clogged the oil pick-up. In situations like yours, the oil pan should have been removed and the broken plastic pieces cleaned out before the engine was started.

Question:  1991 Pontiac LeMans  mileage: 100,000.  This is kind of simple...I have no heat in the beast and went to change the thermostat after checking all the fluid levels, which were ok, and to no surprise to me...I cant find the thermostat.  Now I'm not a Mr. Goodwrench but, I can do some things and haven’t had a problem with any of the other cars and changing the thermostat.  Part of the problem is the engine is a Daewoo.  There is a reservoir that is separate from the radiator and the hoses don’t seem to have any connection that would support a thermostat.  So, can you help me out?  If so talk to me like I am 4, so I can finally thaw my toes out.

Answer:   We are not so sure the thermostat is the problem.  You may not be getting any hot coolant flowing through the heater.  The heater control valve may be faulty.  In addition, check the vacuum lines that control the doors and the heater ducts.

Question:  1989 Pontiac Lemans mileage: 155,000  I am trying to change the blower motor and cannot locate it.  I have checked along the firewall and even behind the glove box.  Can you help me?

Answer:   The blower motor is located behind the heater box duct.

Question:  1991 Pontiac Lemans  mileage: 101,255.  The ignition switch lock set broke and I have to replace it.  I have the dash off and remove the electrical part on the backside of the switch but how do I get the tumbler out so I can install a new one.

Answer:   Remove the steering wheel to access the release for the lock assembly.

Question: 1992 Pontiac Lemans  mileage: 120,000. How to R&R front disc pads & rotors?

Answer: 1. Remove the wheels, 2. Remove the bolts holding the calipers backing plates, 3. Remove the bolts holding backing plates to spindle, 4. Remove brake rotor. Reverse the order to install.

Question:  1992 Pontiac Lemans  mileage: 90,000. My '92 Pontiac Lemans has been diagnosed as having a failed a/c & heater blower motor relay. Where, on the car can I find this relay? Is this an easy part to change? Where can I buy the replacement part?

Answer: We think it is located under the hood on the passenger side on the air conditioning duct. Yes, it is easy to change and most auto parts should have it.
