Pontiac Catalina Repair Questions
Question:
1973 Pontiac Catalina 400 mileage: 140,000. My car
is backfiring through the carburetor. I have
changed the timing chain and gears, the plug wires,
plugs, rotor, distributor cap, points, set the timing,
and cleaned my carb. After all of this it is
noticeably better, but still has the backfire.
What else is there to do or check?
Answer:
Do a compression check; check for broken valve springs
and for a “flat” cam.
Question:
1970 Pontiac Catalina 400 V8 mileage: 150,000. The
car will start very well when it is cold but as soon as
it warms up it begins to sputter and miss and then dies.
The choke is not sticking and I've replaced the coil. I
also cleaned the carburetor.
Answer:
Check for vacuum leaks, check the fuel pump pressure
and flow. Check the vacuum advance plate in
the distributor for wear.
