MORE: Pontiac 6000 Repair Questions

Question: 1988 Pontiac 6000 mileage 235,000. We use it every day to deliver newspapers. Four days ago, we noticed that there were no brake lights, so he changed the fuse and they came back on. Then, on Saturday, he noticed that they had gone off again. This time, when he tried to replace the fuse, the fuse kept blowing. He would put it in, and then when he pushed on the brake pedal, the fuse would blow. He tried 15, 20 and 25 amp fuses and they all blew out. Now, I'm going to tell you what he said, even though I don't know anything about this. It might not make sense. He said that he checked the relay that the hazard lights and the brake lights are on, and the points were burnt. He filed the points down in the hopes that this would work. He tried another fuse and again....when he pushed the brake pedal down, the fuse would blow. We have tail lights, and the hazard lights work, so we think that there is a short, but we can't find it. Do you think that's what it is? We really need to have this car fixed because we use it everyday. Could you please tell us why the fuses keep blowing when he pushes on the brake and maybe where to look for a short if you think there is one? I really hope this makes sense to you.

Answer: First, check for damage in any of the wiring. If your car is equipped with a trail hitch, check the wiring that hooks to the trailer. If this checks out okay, you may have a faulty turn signal switch.

Question: 1987 Pontiac 6000 STE 2.8 mileage: 100,000. My 1987 Pontiac 6000 STE has 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS. The braking system has an electronic motor and pump. The motor and pump must be replaced. New it is over $1800, used, or rebuilt cannot be found. I have been told that this system was only used for a year or two. My Question is: Can I install a regular braking system from another Pontiac 6000, without ABS. How hard would it be? Would the cars computer system need changes?

Answer: Yes, the ABS brake system can be replaced with a non-ABS system. A Mitchell, Chilton, Haynes, dealer auto repair manual or a specialty repair book for your make of car will have step-by-step instructions so you can judge for yourself the difficulty based on your level of experience.

Question:  1985 Pontiac 6000 fuel injection mileage: 116,000.  I put motor oil in my gas tank because I thought it was gas line anti-freeze.  I only put like a cup or so in.  I drove it to school today and there were no problems.  Then later I filled it up with gas.  Is there anything I should do?  Will it be ok?

Answer:  That amount of motor oil in the gas tank will cause no harm; in fact, a slight amount is beneficial to the motor.

Question:  1986 Pontiac 6000  mileage: 130,000.  I was coming home last night and the car died.  I try to start it and it turned over but did not start.  I pulled home this morning and found that I had a leak at my thermostat housing.  Is there a computer shut down on this and how do I reset it the car?  Turns over good but wont start.

Answer:   The computer should not shut down because of a coolant leak.   Your car is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system.  An independent auto service center can scan your computer for fault or error codes. There are scanners that you can use to do the same thing. We recommend the the pocket scanners The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components.

Question:  1988 Pontiac 6000 LE 2.8 V6 mileage: 125,000.  The car sounds as though it is fuel starved, (the fuel filter is new, fuel pump is working, and there is pressure at the fuel rail) it will only catch with the gas pedal to the floor but will stall when you let off the gas.  All this occurs after the car is warmed up.

Answer: Your car is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system.  An independent auto service center can scan your computer for fault or error codes.  The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components.

Question: 1985 Pontiac 6000 LE  mileage: 114,000. I have gone through three alternator belts in less than 3 months. I keep tension on the belt and it is the correct amount of tension. While inspecting the pulley on the alternator, I noticed it was worn. Could this squeaking be cause by the belt quality or should I replace the alternator.

Answer: Check the alignment of all the pulleys the problem belt contacts. If any misalignment is found that may be the problem. Yes, a worn belt grove in the alternator pulley will accelerate belt wear. Use a good quality belt. With the belt off the alternator, spin the alternator and listen for bad bearings. If okay, the pulley can be replaced separately.

Question: 1989 Pontiac 6000 3.8, mileage: 139,000. My daughter's 6000 has a habit of dying when she comes to a stop. It starts right back up and idles fine. I changed the fuel filter two months ago and it ran fine until a week ago. At the time I changed the filter I checked for codes and had none. Now I have a code 3. What that code is I’m not sure the engine is a muti-port fuel injected engine. This all happens when the car is fully warmed up. Any ideas?

Answer:  Try servicing the fuel injection. Clean the carbon deposits from the throttle bore and idle passage. We are not sure what code "3" is either. Most code numbers start at 10.

Question:  1989 Pontiac 6000 LE, mileage: 160,000 What is the best adhesive to use for re-gluing the interior roof liner? We used 3M spray adhesive and it did not work.

Answer: Some headliners deteriorate completely and no adhesive will stick because the base just falls away. It the headliner material is solid you can do a quality repair. We do not have the 3M-product number and 3M makes quite a few different types of adhesives for various materials. We have used 3M adhesive to glue headliners in the past and it works quite well. Don't use too much adhesive or you will be replacing the headliner anyway.
