Plymouth Grand Voyager Repair Questions and Answers

Question:  1994 Plymouth  mileage: 140,000.  This van has been having problems off and on for approximately 6 months.  The carburetor is flooding but the engine is not stalling.   It has low power and is guzzling gas.  Extremely low gas mileage.  A service person said it was the catalytic converter; it was replaced and hasn't cured the problem.  It is running better but not right.  Also is there another catalytic converter inside the manifold.  Also tried a new oxygen sensor but couldn't find it to replace.  The engine is a Mitsubishi 2.6 litre what else could it be.  Thanks

Answer:  If your carburetor is flooding it probably is caused by a failing needle and seat inside the carburetor or a bad float.  Also, check for a vacuum leak.  The catalytic converters fail if the carburetor is running to rich due to the extra fuel.  Fixing the carburetor-flooding problem should be done before replacing any of the catalytic converters.  We have not worked on your model car for a long time so we are not sure, but believe that there is “pre-cat” in the manifold.  If there is, it will be obvious because of the large bulge in the manifold.

Question:  1994 Plymouth Voyager mileage: 89,000.  Would too much antifreeze cause my vehicle to blow cool air from my heater?  It works fine when in park, but it and the car cool down when driving.  The needle goes back to cool also.

Answer:    Too much anti-freeze would not cause cool air to blow from your heater.  Your problem is probably with the engine thermostat; it is either stuck open or it is too cold (160) and should be replaced with the proper one.

Question:  1994 Plymouth Voyager mileage: 65,000.  Heater will not get hot. Temperature gauge is normal.  Air is just barely warm.  Have replaced thermostat, vacuum control switch in dash and heater core.  Have bypassed the valve at the firewall.  Water hose to heater is hot to the touch.  Return water feels cooler to the touch.

Answer:   Sounds like you are having trouble with the doors in the heater duct not opening properly.  You might want to check the vacuum supply to the heater control switch in the dash.

Question:  1985 Plymouth Voyager.  There is strawberry ice cream colored foam on dipstick where it seals in the hole.  Does not start off in low gear -shifts erratic.  Been having reoccurring trouble with three transmissions.   Am using Dextron III.  Changed cooler twice. Any suggestions.

Answer:    Usually foaming transmission fluid is a result of the fluid level being to low or to high, or possibly moisture or water present in the fluid.

Question:  1992 Plymouth Voyager  mileage: 83,000.  Just replaced the oxygen sensor, but we are unable to turn off the maintenance-required light.  Any suggestions?

Answer:  Try disconnecting the negative battery for approximately 15 seconds and reconnecting.  If the light is still on, have the engine computer scanned for fault codes.

Question:  1989 Plymouth Voyager  mileage: 97,000.  The oil pressure drops when engine is accelerated or while it shifts down from overdrive.  I have replaced the Oil pressure switch or oil pressure sending unit & that has not changed things.   I have not had the oil pressure gage checked.  When it is idling, oil pressure is good.  What is my problem and where does it lie?  I would like to fix this myself.

Answer:    Several things may be causing your problem.  Check for sludge in oil pan restricting oil flow to oil pump pickup.  In addition, check oil return drains in the valve cover area.

Question:  1995 Plymouth Voyager  mileage: 79,000.  Our van has had the "check engine" light on for about two weeks now.   It doesn't come on immediately when you start the car, only within the first five to ten minutes of driving.  It doesn't matter whether you have the heat/air running or not.   It also has a noticeable hesitation when accelerating (after leaving stop signs/lights, climbing exit ramps, etc).  A few times, it has nearly stalled on the interstate, going 60 mph!  At these times, when you "floor" the pedal, it sounds like the transmission is finding the right gear, then it clears up the hesitation for awhile.  My husband changed the spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, connecting hose--all the basic parts he could think of one week ago.  It ran better for about two hours, then the light came on again, and the hesitations restarted.  Please help.

Answer:    The “check engine” light will “light” when there is a malfunction in the engine management system.  The fault code is then stored in the computer.  The computer must be scanned to retrieve these stored faults to pinpoint the malfunctioning component.  Because the check engine light indicates something is wrong, a trip to you neighborhood automobile service center sooner rather than later is recommended.

Question:  1994 Plymouth Voyager  mileage: 85,000.  With engine cold, I have no reverse.  After warm up, about 5 minutes, everything is ok.  Did change the fluid/ level is ok and the filter.

Answer:   We think that the transmission is starting to fail.

Question:  1988 Plymouth Voyager  mileage: 115,000.  Van stalls only in cold weather when at a stop or shifting to reverse from park. Will sometimes stall while slowing down before a stop or while slowly turning into parking space. It will idle ok in park. Have replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor, AIS, TPS, and EGR.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:  Your car is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system.  An independent auto service center can scan your computer for fault or error codes.  The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components.  Also, check for vacuum leaks and have the fuel injection system serviced.  Clean the carbon deposits from the throttle bore and idle passages.

Question:  1995 Plymouth Voyager mileage: 125,000.  Can you tell me the proper alignment for the V-drive belt on this car and motor?  I cannot find the proper information.  The belt broke and am ready to put back together and I have check different books and can not come up with the proper info on this if have a picture to send would help.  Thanks

Answer:   We wish we could help you here.  However, it is almost impossible to describe how the belts should be installed.  We suggest you find another Plymouth and check it for belt placement.  If you see one for sale, maybe the owner would let you look at his/hers.

Question:  1988 Plymouth Voyager  mileage: 115,000.  Whenever the temperature gets below 50 deg. the van will stall when coming to a stop and or switching to reverse.  It will also idle rough.  Van runs great at all other times.  Have replaced EGR valve, TPS, air motor, cap and rotor, wires and plugs.  Any help would be much appreciated!

Answer:   Your car is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system.  An independent auto service center can scan your computer for fault or error codes.  The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components.   Also, check for vacuum leaks and check compression.

Question:  1990 Plymouth Voyager  mileage: 115,000.   I am having trouble getting the starter off. I got the bolt off the bottom and the bolt to the bracket and it won't come off I looked for another bolt but I can't find one. I thought it my just be stuck in the bell housing but when I tried prying it off it didn't move. So how do I get it off?

Answer:   Remove the starter top belt.  It is hard to see – check the replacement starter for location.

Question:  1997 Plymouth Voyager  mileage: 91,000.  Bob and Ken, I hope you can help.  My 1997 Plymouth Voyager has two (2) problems at this time, Problem #1: While driving, the windshield wipers come on by themselves, can be for one time or several.  I was told by one place that it was the switch (on steering column) and by another that it's with the motor. Help!  Problem #2: While turning, usually to the right, there is a noise, sounds like (aaarrruph).  I was told this was the rack & pinion by one person, and the other didn't have a clue.  I have heard of others with Chrysler mini-vans that have the same noise.

Answer:   Answer #1:  Plymouth had a problem with their wiring harness in that model that will need to repaired or replaced to fix that problem.   Answer #2 Check for faulty motor mounts allowing the engine to shift or move during turns.

Question:  1999 Plymouth Voyager   mileage: 160,000.  The Rpms rise to 2000 when my car is in park or neutral.  This just recently started happening.  It usually idles and just above 1.  When I put it in any gear without giving gas it drops back to the normal 1 position.   We had the timing chain replaced about a month ago, but it was running fine until this week.

Answer:   Your car may be ready for a major tune-up including spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter and air filter.  Also, perform a fuel pump pressure test.  Clean fuel injection system including throttle bore, idle speed control motor and passages.  If problem still exists, scan computer for trouble codes.

Question:  1990 Plymouth Grand Voyager  mileage: 182,745.  Cruise control is not working.  I have heard that there is a fuse for this.  I looked in the owner's manual, but it does not say anything about a fuse for the cruise control.  The cruise control is the original that came with the vehicle.

Answer: Test all fuses with the key on.

Question:  1989 Grand Voyager  mileage: 103,000.  My rebuilt engine, no warranty has piston skirt knock.  After 10 minutes of running knock which I only hear at idle goes away.  How long can engines last with this problem?

Answer:  Very difficult to tell how long it may last.  Are you sure, it is piston skirt knock?  Very odd to have on a newly rebuilt engine.

Question:  1994 Plymouth Voyager  mileage: 88,000.  What can cause this auto to occasionally stall out? Sometime it can be restarted immediately other times it will require a 10 to 30 minute before a restart can be accomplished.  These stall occur at random and no specific period can be established. About 1 month ago, the fuel filter was cleaned or replaced and that appeared to correct the problem but only temporarily. Thank you for whatever advice you can provide.

Answer: Your car is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system.  An independent auto service center can scan your computer for fault or error codes.  The information should pinpoint the mal functioning components.

Question:  1992 Plymouth Voyager V6 mileage: 157,000. I have my van in the shop right now and they told me it needed a new motor mount, CV joints and struts. Can you tell me how much this should cost to repair? They told me $722.00. Is this a fair price? They told me it was for all new parts not rebuilt.

Answer: If they use all new parts, it is a good price.

Question:  1986 Plymouth Voyager  mileage: 90,000. Re: timing chain. What is the purpose of the (2) plated links on the timing chain and if all the mating marks are lined up correctly on the gears, what difference does it make where the plated links are on the timing chain.

Answer: Your are right. The plated links are just an aid to help during chain replacement. If the timing marks on the sprockets are aligned properly, it makes no difference.

Question:  1995 Plymouth Grand Voyager mileage: 67,000. I have a very annoying squeak (sounds like and old squeaky bed or a duck) in the front right end of my van. We have lubed the bushings, and my husband said you can feel it vibrate on the tie rod end. Is there anyway to fix this problem? The dealer says it is not unsafe however; the noise is very loud and embarrassing when driving. It is driving me nuts. Would this be considered normal wear and tear? Trying to figure out if it would be under warranty. Thank you for your input. We have replaced the front struts but it still did not fix the problem.

Answer: Some possible causes of your squeak are the tie rod ends, lower ball joints, sway bar bushings and lower control arm bushings. The factory eliminated the old fashioned Zirk fitting for lubing these items.

Question:  1994 Plymouth Voyager , mileage: 97,000. My Mini van seems to run okay but every so often when you come to a stoplight it drops right off and shuts off, it can be easily started again and the problem is only occasional.

Answer:  If a major tune-up has not been done recently, that could be the problem. Replace the spark plugs, plug wires, fuel and air filters, etc. Also, replace the oxygen sensor. In addition, service the fuel injection system. Clean the carbon deposits from the throttle bore and idle passages.

Question:  1988 Plymouth Voyager  mileage 100,000. Wiring diagram for wires to coil, changed engine forgot location of wires. Thanks.

Answer:  Black with yellow tracer goes to negative side and the dark green with black tracer goes to the positive side.
