Plymouth Laser Repair Questions
Question: 1990 Plymouth Laser 2.0
mileage: 138,880. Dear Bob or Ken, Today I took my Laser
out to buy a new headlight and about 3 miles from my
house the car seemed to have "popped" in Neutral, but
the thing was that it was in drive. I stopped and none
of the gears did anything, and all it did was rev up
when I pressed the gas. There was no abnormal noises or
anything. Even when I put into park, it would do nothing
at all. I checked it later and realized that when I put
it into drive 1 2 or 3 that the speedometer would go up
and so would the odometer, same when I put it into
reverse. I came to the conclusion that my transmission
is still good but the transaxle went bad.... any
suggestions?
Answer: Check to see if one or both
of the drive axles have slipped out of the transmission.
Question: 1991 Plymouth Laser 2.0L
mileage: 156,000. Turn ignition on nothing, play with the
key and can hear the starter solenoid trying to engage
slowly. Will start once in awhile. Had Starter and
Battery tested (physically took out and had auto store
put a load on it) - they both checked out. Owners manual
indicates a starter relay under dash, called dealer and
several auto parts stores, there is none listed
(Mitsubishi Engine). Found three relays under dash above
fuse box. Left one unknown, middle one found it was the
door lock relay, right one unknown. Manual transmission
must have clutch in to start. There is a switch that
engages when clutch is pushed in, maybe causing problem?
Since the starter and battery check out, I think I have
narrowed down to: 1. Starter relay (if there is one), 2.
Clutch switch, 3. Bad wiring harness (+ cable is a
wiring harness). Any thoughts? Joe
Answer: Check the voltage at the
starter and the solenoid while trying to start the car.
You may have a voltage drop somewhere in the system.
Question: 1993 Plymouth Laser 1.8
mileage: 127,000. The vehicle has sat for around 4 months
without any attention or driving. I had it checked-out
with a competent mechanic prior to purchase. The engine
ran great and the transmission shifted very well.
Needing to get it inspected (including NC emission
tests) I added an additive to the gas that "ensured"
passing the emissions test. 30 miles after adding the
additive, the engine seems less peppy, and the
transmission shifts really hard (up and down) and will
not go into the upper gears. I'd appreciate your
perspective. Concerning the transmission, is there an
underlying mechanical problem. Could there be a
connection to the additive? If so, is this permanent or
temporary--most likely sensor malfunctioning.
Answer: Some gasoline additives can
cause problems with your engine. The oxygen sensor may
have been damaged or possibly a catalytic converter is
partially plugged.
Question:
1991 Plymouth Laser 2.0 Non turbo mileage: 116,000.
I have a deep vibration sound that starts at 2900-3000
rpm in every gear of a 5 speed manual trans, 2.0 DOHC
engine, it almost is gone after 3100-rpm just sounds
much lower.
Answer:
We think that the vibration may be coming from your
clutch assembly.
