Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1988 Oldsmobile Calais
mileage: 120,000. I have a 1988 Oldsmobile Calais which
has a big running problem. When cranking over it
backfires a bunch. Eventually it will start but the
timing seems to be way off i.e. no power and it labors
to keep running. Since it has a distributor-less
ignition, I am not sure how or if I can adjust the
timing. The computer has been replaced with no luck. Do
you have any ideas?
Answer: We think that the valve
timing may have jumped a tooth. A compression check is
also advised.
Question:
1985 Oldsmobile Calais mileage: 132,000. My
car has trouble downshifting- late and hesitant.
My car is also slow to downshift when I step on the
accelerator. I just recently changed the
transmission fluid/filter but that did not solve the
problem. I also tried adjusting the throttle
detent cable but I don't have the appropriate specs or
info as to what the correct adjustment may be. It does
however affect the problem but doesn't fix it.
Answer:
You can adjust the transmission throttle cable by
following these instruction: With the engine off,
hold the throttle wide open. Undo the adjustment
lock and pull back on the cable. Reset the
adjustment lock. If you still have problems try
servicing the transmission by changing the fluid and
filter.
