MORE: Oldsmobile Alero Repair Questions

Question: 2000 Oldsmobile Alero  mileage: 45,000. As I am driving, my door lock actuators keep activating to lock the doors. They activate every 2-3 seconds. But sometimes they stop (and behave normal). Sometimes they seem to activate when I hit a bump, but other times I don't really hit any bumps when they activate. This occurs only while the car is moving. When stopped at an intersection, the locks don't do anything. I have not noticed any other problems locking or unlocking the doors - when the car is stopped/parked. Also, in conjunction with this, when stopped at an intersection, the interior dome light comes on. Then goes off once I start moving - but then the doors start locking again. Additionally, when I park and get out, the interior lights do not always go off - sometimes they stay on for many minutes, sometimes they go off in about 20 seconds (as normal). Sometimes re-closing the doors fix this, sometimes not. Any advice is much appreciated. Thank You

Answer: Your door lock problem is more than likely due to pin switch (door switch) that is either out of adjustment or is faulty.

Question: 1999 Oldsmobile Alero 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 177,00 miles. My car's 'service engine' light has just come on & I'm noticing a smell of burning metal. The car has 177,000 miles on it. Any ideas?

Answer: First thing you need to do is have the codes read, Autozone does it free, Post the results with the code number(s).

Question: 2001 Oldsmobile Alero 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 162,000 miles. My wife was driving her car and the service engine soon light came on as well as the traction control light as well as the abs light. She did not notice any difference in her brakes and when she came to a stop, she shut the engine off and turned it on again and the lights went out and stayed out. Any guess as to what that might be?

Answer: As a guess a possible speed sensor giving bad or no data. The computer may be interpreting that there is no movement or unequal movement happening.

Question: 2001 Oldsmobile Alero 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 85,000 miles. procedure to re-start after running out of fuel

Answer: What is it doing-is it refusing to start or ????? If it is check the fuel pressure before you change the fuel filter-might be the pump due to it being overheated without fuel to cool it.

Question: 1999 Oldsmobile Alero 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 115,000 miles. my car fogs up as soon as it gets a little cold outside. I have put r34a in it to make sure it had enough in it. I also put a new pressure switch on, (I believe it has one pressure switch for high and low pressure). the problem is better, but is still pretty bad. the windshields doesn't fog up anymore, but the other windows are very hard to see out of. if I crack open both front windows the fog will go away slowly in the front, but the rear is still solid fog. the drain isn't blocked, it will still drain out allot when I stop. also, allot of times it will be fine, but if I stop somewhere, even for a few minutes, and I get back in to drive again, it will fog up. I can even tell its humid inside sometimes, the air is thick, seeming like the AC isn't working, but not all the time does it do this when it fogs up.. do you have any suggestions?

Answer: there could be a small leak in your heater core. check under the rug and see if floor is real wet, there could be rain water entering the car, causing condensation.

Question: 2001 Oldsmobile Alero 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 125,000 miles. I rebuilt my 2001 Alero after a leaking lower intake problem. Had all parts cleaned at the machine shop, replaced all pistons, etc. Replaced entire fuel rail (injectors, regulator...) with new. Started with a miss ans DTC for random misfire, no. 3 and no. 5 misfire. Checked everything out, injectors 3 & 5 were crossed - corrected that. Still get random or no. 3 misfire.

Answer: Have you done a compression test on the entire engine and a leak down test on #3? Need to be sure it doesn't have a valve leaking or something mechanical before you condemn the electronics

Question: 2001 Oldsmobile Alero 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 99,000 miles. I just sent a message out there about my car sounding as if it is dragging something its pretty loud, and feels a bit sluggish. I also wanted to add that it gets louder when I step on the gas. Hopefully I might get some ideas on what this might be. Thanks!

Answer: You could start by checking that the exhaust components are still up where they belong and not hanging down, dragging. Also, I would check the brakes and certainly the hub and differential bearings as they can make a lot of noise when going bad.

Question: 2001 Oldsmobile Alero 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 165,000 miles. I have power to turn the starter over and I hear the fuel pump start when I turn the key, but the engine won't start. I do not know where the fuel filter is located on this vehicle; the fuel pump I assume is under the back seat. I have not checked the plugs. I don't know if is getting the correct pressure or anything. Any help would be appreciated

Answer: The pump is in the tank. Need to find what is missing, fuel and/or spark...compression is probably fine. Spray some carb cleaner or starting fluid into the throttle body and see if it starts for a moment.

Question: 1999 Oldsmobile Alero 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 100,000 miles. I have changed the ignition coils and top of ignition over boots and engine starts fine but have a cloud of white smoke from the exhaust that smells of gas . any ideas what else it could be

Answer: sounds to me like a blown head gasket or cracked/warped head or a leaking intake manifold gasket.

Question: 2001 Oldsmobile Alero 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 137000 miles
I heard grinding noises coming from the water pump and replaced it twice now and about a week after each replacement the grinding noise returned. The first pump was a new after market and the second pump was a rebuilt OEM. Is there something else wrong or am I installing the pump incorrectly, (i.e. incorrect orientation on the bolt pattern? I did notice an arrow marking on the edge of the pump which I installed on top.

Answer: Remove the serp belt, rotate all pulleys, they should spin freely, all except the crank! Pay particular attention to the a/c pulley, and did you replace the belt and tensioner?

Question: 2000 Oldsmobile Alero 4 cyl Two wheel drive Automatic 89,000 miles. My passenger side seat won't lock into place, so the seat is always laying forward and moving along the track. I was wondering where the locking mechanism was located and what I could do to fix that problem. Thanks.

Answer: The mechanism is probably seized up. The are a couple dogs that have a cable between them. They are controlled by the lever in the front of the seat. You need to get in there and see where it is sticking, lubricate it and work it so it operates.

Question: 2002 Oldsmobile Alero 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 160,000 miles. Where is the location of thermostat?

Answer: On a 3.4L V6 it is located within the housing which is in the metal part where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine. there are two bolts holding it in that are extremely hard to get to. you must remove the intake, throttle body, and exhaust heat shield just to get to it.

Question: 1999 Oldsmobile Alero 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic sedan miles. just purchased used 1999 Alero, transmission leak, however can't find dip stick location.

Answer: You may not have one! Some of the GM's have just a red plug, you will need a lift, or a way to raise it enough to get under and check the fluid, book says remove plug, fluid should be level with the bottom of the hole...
