Oldsmobile 98 Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1985 Oldsmobile 98 3.8 mileage: 113,000. My car was bought at an auction. It did not start, so I replaced the fuel pump, and that fixed it. I drove for about 50 miles, no problems, and then all of a sudden the tranny went into neutral out at third gear. If you put the car back in 2nd, it will engage just fine, and shift between 1st and 2nd just fine. At idle, it engages just fine in reverse and drive, but as soon as it gets to 3rd, it just goes neutral. Any suggestions?

Answer: It appears from what you have told us that you are probably ready for a transmission overhaul.

Question: 1986 Oldsmobile 98 regency 3.8 litre mileage: 133,00 KM. When I start the car when it is cold it starts ok and idles for 7 seconds than stalls. The third time I start it it stays running and idles ok. When I drive the car, it runs and idles ok. If I shut the car off when it is hot and start it back up in five minutes it idles very rough and sometimes the check engine light will come on. The computer code is 44 - lean exhaust when it is idling rough I take out for a spin and it runs ok. I had the fuel pump changed and same problem. I changed the MAF sensor and same problem. I changed spark plugs and fuel filter 6 months ago. Any suggestions.

Answer: Try cleaning the idle speed motor and idle passages, then check for proper operation of the speed motor.

Question:  1991 Olds 98 3.8 mileage: 111,941.  My car will not start after the engine cools down.  The mechanic has replaced the crankshaft, camshaft sensors, IGN module and computer.  He has checked for electrical problems.  Computer shows everything is fine.  He has been playing with it for about 3 weeks.  Originally, it burned up the two sensors and the module and he does not know why it did that.  He is really stumped.  Any ideas?  Even tried a new coil pack.  Two mechanics now stumped.  They have asked several gm mechanics in area as well.

Answer:    You need check and see if you have fuel pressure when the car will not start. If you don't have any pressure you will need to replace the fuel pump and filter.  Also check to see if  you have spark when the car will not start.  Then check to see if you have electrical pulse to the injectors when the car will not start.  If the windings in the fuel injector have shorted, the electrical draw from the computer by that injector will burn out the computer.  Each injector should be checked with an Ohmmeter for proper resistance.  Also, with an Ohmmeter, check the ground connections to the computer.   Finally, check the alternator for a failing diode.  If a diode is weak, AC volts can leak out and cause havoc with a computer.  A computer is designed to work on DC volts.

Question:  1967 Oldsmobile 98 425 mileage: 89,000.  Hey, guys   I have just purchased this beautiful car for a very good price due to left rear axle being out about 1/4 of an inch.  Unfortunately, I do not have much experience with rear-ends at all let alone the fact that this one has the limited slip rear-end.  I have pulled the rear end apart and of course found that the wheel bearings on this side are shot.   Any suggestions on how to press the new bearings would be greatly appreciated.  I am trying to repair the car where it sits so I have taken out the shaft to press the bearings at the garage I work at.  What I am wondering is if there is any secrets or tips that I should know about to press the bearings in the rear-end.

Answer:    No secrets.  Just use the proper fixtures to hold the bearings and axle.  Be sure to put the retainer back on the axle before you press on the new bearing.

Question:  1985 Oldsmobile 98 regency V6 mileage: 144,600.  It has fuel injection I have replaced the EGR valve and air filter and the check engine light came on before it was shutting off as I was driving and it would shut off at a idle.

Answer:   Your car may be ready for a major tune-up including spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter and air filter.  Also, perform a fuel pump pressure test.  Clean fuel injection system including throttle bore, idle speed control motor and passages.  If problem still exists, scan computer for trouble codes.

Question:  1991 Oldsmobile 98 touring 3.8 mileage: 135,000.  Check oil level warning keeps flashing in information center.  What controls this?

Answer:   Oil level sensor and it probably needs replacing.
