Question: 1995 Nissan 300 ZX  mileage: 170,000. I purchased an  300-zx-turbo/automatic trans at auction a couple of weeks ago. I pulled the trans pan and found some very fine powdered chrome in the pan. I replaced the fluid with Dextron 3. The trans was slow to engage when stopped if very hot before, now, the trans is very noisy. I noticed online that there seems to be quite a few service bulletins regarding the automatic transmission fluid. Am I using the correct fluid?

Answer: Try changing the fluid and see if it performs better. From what you have told us though, we believe your transmission is failing.

Question:  1994 Nissan 300 ZX  mileage: 112,000 .  My car is a 1994 Nissan 300 ZX with a three speed automatic with an electronic overdrive for fourth gear.  When I switch the overdrive on, it stays in third gear even when the car is warmed up.  The switch and overdrive solenoid are working but I have been to several auto electricians and they cannot seem to find the fault.  Could you please give me a few suggestions on how to fix my problem?   Thank you.

Answer: The overdrive circuit is controlled by the engine temperature sensor to prevent it from going into overdrive when the engine is cold.  If the sensor is faulty, it will not allow your transmission to shift into overdrive.  Also, check the thermostat, if it is stuck open, it will not allow the engine to come up to normal temperature and the transmission will not shift into overdrive.

Question:  1996 Nissan 300 ZX  mileage: 110,500.  Two questions actually, first, my steering has approximately 1-2 inches of slop at neutral, makes it tough on the highway.  2nd, when I apply moderate to heavy braking, there is a very loud click/snap noise (not repetitive, just one loud click) from the (LT) front suspension.  It also does it when I hit a bump, but just on the left wheel.  I recently replaced the front brake pads, and the shims are installed, also, for reasons that aren't important here, I have had 3 of the 4 shock struts replaced, guess which one is original?  The Lt front.

Answer:    First answer:  Check the front suspension for worn parts, paying close attention to the steering rack.  Second answer:   Try replacing the fourth strut.

Question:  1995 Nissan 300 ZX  mileage: 150,000 .  The rear engine seal has started to leak oil, noticeable only in very small puddles when parked overnight. As yet (for at least a year) this hasn't affected the clutch at all.  Changing the oil helped for a while, as did replacing both PCV valves, but the leak is back. Any ideas?....I sure don't want to have to pull the tranny & replace the seal if I can get away with it.

Answer:    Over time all engines start leaking oil.  The seals and gaskets get hard and brittle.  Replacing them may be necessary to stop your oil leak.

Question:  1994 Nissan 300ZX mileage: 135,000. The rear end of the car feels loose when I drive over bumps in the road. It often feels like I could lose control of the car. The tires are in good shape and I cannot see anything else that would be wrong. I was wondering if the rear stabilizer bar could be broken or damaged.

Answer: We do not think the stabilizer bar is your problem. It only "works" when cornering not going over bumps. A more likely cause would be the rear struts. Also, check suspension for damaged or bent parts. Check rubber bushing is suspension components.
