Nissan 240sx Repair Questions and Answers

Question:  1998 Nissan 240SX  mileage: 94,450.  The ignition switch on my car will not turn at all.  The key lock button is also stuck in the down position.  Is there a simple solution or does the whole thing need to be replaced?

Answer:   Unfortunately, the whole switch and lock will need to be replaced.

Question:  1997 Nissan 240SX  mileage: 150,000.  I recently had the master and slave cylinder replaced.  The mechanic adjusted clutch pedal one inch from floor.  With in 100 miles the pedal is at top of its travel, and the clutch is slipping.  Mechanic readjusted the pedal to specs and again is slipping.  What could be happening?

Answer:    If the clutch has not been replaced in your vehicle, it may be time for you to replace the clutch disk, pressure plate and the release bearing.

Question: 1996 Nissan 240SX  mileage: 134,000. We are currently here in South Korea and it is very impossible to find a good mechanic that understands our car problem (not Korean made). We recently changed the spark plugs and distributor caps. When we start our car in the morning, we don't have any problem starting the engine. But when we drove it about 15 minutes, it will stall and die and won't start. It will start running again if we wait for at least 3 hours or more.

Answer: You must determine if your engine will not start because of lack of fuel or lack of spark. If fuel is the problem, check the fuel pump, pressure etc. If no spark, check the coil, distributor, 12 volts to the coil, etc.

Question:  1996 Nissan 240 SX mileage: 100,600.  My question is similar to one you have had before about the engine heat gauge in the red.  We noticed the car leaking antifreeze.  We had the car checked, but after the pressure test, there was no leak.  Four days later, the same thing happened.  Does this mean the car will overheat even if it is a phantom reading?  I would like to change out the thermostat myself, but is this a good idea?  Is it fairly easy in this car?  Thanks in advance.

Answer:    Cooling system leaks are sometimes hard to find.   A pressure test does not always locate them.   Check the engine and radiator for fresh coolant stains.  Check the water pump closely.  Your car will overheat if it is low on coolant.  Check exhaust for white smoke, which may indicate internal engine problems.

Question:  1995 Nissan 240 SX mileage: 102,000. I noticed my water temperature gauge was getting too high so I figured I should put anti-freeze in the radiator and that plastic jug next to it to cool it down some. After doing that the same day (I let the car cool down while I was at work for 8 hrs.) It still shows the gauge way up there in the red after just a few minutes of driving. The gauge isn’t broken because it does fluctuate from hot to really hot. What else could it be?? Thanks in advance!

Answer: First thing to check or replace would be the thermostat. Next would be the radiator. You can buy a brand new radiator online and install it very easily.
