Mitsubishi 3000 GT Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1999 Mitsubishi 3000 GT mileage: 103,200. I hear a knocking noise coming from the engine. I can hear it sometimes at idle but mostly when the engine is revved to 2-3k RPM. The sound seems to go away if I unplug the spark plug to the #5 cylinder. Any suggestions on what it could be?

Answer: From the tests that you have described, it could indicate a possible broken piston or broken ring, or a failing wrist pin or rod bearing on the #5 cylinder.

Question: 1998 Mitsubishi 3000 GT turbo mileage: 60,000. Hi, I just got through with the 60,000-mile service at a Mitsubishi dealership. The problem I had before and after the service is that I have a difficult time shifting the manual transmission into 1st and 3rd gear. Is it normal in this car? Is there anything that can make it easier to shift? Everything else related to the transmission is working fine. On a cold start, it is really a struggle to shift but as I drive a few miles shifting gets easier but not smooth. Yes, I do press the clutch all the way to the floor before I shift gears.

Answer: The first thing we would do is to change gear lube in the transmission. Also, check the clutch to make sure it is operating properly and releasing fully.

Question: 1997 Mitsubishi 3000 GT  mileage: 133,000. My car is a 5 speed standard and I believe that the clutch has gone out. The car will go into gear but when the clutch pedal is let out, the car will not move. I also smell a burning smell such as a clutch going out. What is your recommendation and if it is the clutch is this a job that only a dealer should do? If so do you have an idea as to what the total cost would be, parts, labor, etc. I'm trying to get an idea since my parents are making me save up for the total repair.

Answer: From what you have described, it sounds like your clutch has failed. Most independent repair service centers should be able to do the work for you. We would highly recommend replacing the clutch with new parts. As for the cost, it varies from region to region. Call local service centers for cost comparisons.

Question:  1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT  mileage: 132,000.  Hi - In April I brought my car into Mitsubishi because it was making a loud knocking noise while driving and also at idle. The noise improved at higher rpm's.  I was told I needed a tensioner and that I might as well replace the timing belt, while they replaced the tensioner.  I had the work done and the car seemed quiet at first.  Now it is back to making the same noise.  I hear it as soon as I start the car.  It is worsening, just like it did before the work was done.  Does it sound to you like the belt needs to be adjusted, or are they going to tell me that it is something else, entirely?

Answer:   With 132,000 miles on your vehicle, it is possible that something other than the timing belt is making the noise.
