MORE: Mercury Lynx Repair Questions

Question:  1986 Mercury Lynx  mileage: 157,000.  I have a problem that I have been trying to diagnose now for about two years. My Lynx will go for about 3-4 months and run just fine, then out of the blue I will be driving along and it will sputter and stop running.  I will let it sit for a few hours and it will start back up, run for a while, and quit again.  This will go on for up to a month then it will return to running normal.  I have had it in for diagnostic, tune-ups, carburetor rebuilt, thorough electrical inspection, all to no avail, I am at a loss.  Right now, I am battling the on/off running syndrome.  Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:   If possible, when your car dies, and will not restart, check for spark at the spark plugs.  If there is no spark, the problem may be the ignition module or they pick-up coil in the distributor.

Question:  1987 Mercury Lynx mileage: 139,000 I am trying to find the location of the fuel pump relay on an '87 Mercury Lynx Hatchback (1.9 l with central fuel injection [CFI] and passive restrain system). I have called 4 local Mercury dealerships service departments and have received comments that the relay is: back near the inertial cut-out switch; behind the glove box; in the engine compartment on the left wheel well under the master brake cylinder; in the engine compartment near the ignition module. I have not been able to find it in any of these locations. Could you guide me to this relay?? Please?? Thank you.

Answer:  It is located under the left side of the dash above the brake pedal. It is the green colored relay
