MORE: Mazda MX6 Repair Questions

Question:  1990 Mazda MX-6  mileage: 135,000.  When trying to accelerate from a stop, the engine will lurch and shake violently.   It is the worst when letting the clutch out into 1st gear, moderate into 2nd gear, and above that it runs fine.  The lurching isn't quite as bad if you accelerate slowly, but if you try to take off fast, it almost stalls out the engine.  Help!

Answer:    Replacing the clutch assembly and motor mounts should fix the problem. You should check the accordion-like rubber hose that connects the airflow sensor to the intake manifold. This hose develops cracks that allow extra air into the intake manifold when the engine shifts during acceleration, causing the car to lurch.

Question:  1991 Mazda MX-6 LX.  Mileage 115,000 Any information on pulling the head, to replace gasket, on a 90-91 Mazda, Auto Trans. Are there any good step-by-step instructions available?  Worked on many domestic cars, not many foreign makes.

Answer:  A Mitchell  repair manual will have diagrams showing head gasket replacement.  The online repair manual will also give step-by-step instructions.

Question:  1995 Mazda MX-6 mileage: 65,000. Hurricane Irene hit my area 2-days ago, and my car was flooded, water rose to about the door handles. I have moved the car to dry ground, but it won't start. When I turn the key the starter is engaging but the engine feels like its stuck in the position its in. Is there anything I can do if water is in my engine?

Answer: Check the engine oil for water and also the gas tank. Change the oil if necessary. If the engine will not crank over as if it is frozen, remove the spark plugs and turn the engine over by hand to remove the water from the cylinders. Dry out the ignition system – spark plugs, coil, etc. On your engine are several sensors that feed information to the computer. Remove the connectors and dry them out. If the computer got wet, try drying it but be prepared to replace it.
