MORE: Mazda MPV Repair Questions

Question: 1993 Mazda MPV mileage: 87,000. When stepping on the brakes for an extended period of time (e.g., when stopped at a traffic light), the brakes go down lower, and the anti-lock light and brake lights come on. This happens intermittently. I would then tap on the brakes again to make the lights go away. At least three different mechanics (including the dealer) checked out the brake system and told me that there were no leaks and the brakes were in good working order. The dealer also told me that it was either the anti-lock controller unit or the master cylinder, but that they couldn't tell for sure until the problem got worse. One mechanic checked it out with a computer and found nothing wrong with the anti-lock system. Shall I just wait until it gets worse or go ahead and replace both the master cylinder and the ABS controller unit?

Answer: We suggest replacing the master cylinder first. It sounds like you have an internal leak in the cylinder allowing the brake pedal to sink.

Question: 1992 Mazda MPV-4WD  mileage: 110,000. During the spring/summer/fall, when my van is warmed up to normal operating temp, if I shut it off and let it cool down part way, it doesn't want to start. It acts like it is being choked. If it cools completely, or if it is still at full temperature, it starts fine, but when it has had 20-30 minutes to cool, it acts this way. It will run Very rough, when it does finally start for about 30 seconds to a minute. Any thoughts?

Answer: An internal fuel leak, possibly a fuel injector or fuel pressure regulator, could be causing your problem.

Question: 1991 Mazda MPV  mileage: 75,000.  I have a hard starting condition when cold. In addition, occasionally the idle is rough, and then the car just stalls, and I have to let it sit a few minutes before I can get it start.   I retrieved trouble codes 1 (no ignition pulse) and 3 (No G signal).  Do I need to replace the distributor?  I tested the resistance of the ignition coil and it was within specs.  I tested the resistance of the pick up coil and it was within limits.  What else should I be looking at?  Thanks!

Answer:    Your car may be ready for a major tune-up including spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter and air filter.  Also, perform a fuel pump pressure test.  Clean fuel injection system including throttle bore, idle speed control motor and passages.  If problem still exists, scan computer for trouble codes.

Question:  1990 Mazda MPV  mileage: 210,000.  Our MPV has a great body, with no rust and a decent interior.  We take a lot of time trying to do good maintenance, but the engine/trans are getting worn; obviously with that many miles why not.  We want to keep the van, we really like it... but we've never been really wild about the lack of performance.  I would most likely be replacing the eng/trans with new ones.  I am assuming, is there any performance gains to be made anywhere with this combo?   I do not think it has much more than 120 hp maybe 150 torque that just is not much for this vehicle to have safe passing power let alone try to tow anything...any ideas would be welcome.  I would also be curious about what improvements could be made in the braking and suspension departments...I have spoken with another mechanic and I'm looking to get a few more opinions...Thank you for the time.

Answer:  The factory parts are designed for maximum performance and reliability.  We would think a “fresh” new engine would run, power wise, stronger than the old one with 210,000 miles.

Question:  1994 Mazda MPV  mileage: 70,000.  Sometimes in the morning when I go to start the mini van and let it warm up for about 5 minutes or so, the engine seems like it wants to die out and shut off.  I have to play with the gas pedal to keep it running.  Could there be something wrong with my fuel system or is there a vacuum leak somewhere?  I hope you can help me solve this problem and any suggestion will be very grateful...thanks and hope to hear from one of you guys ASAP

Question:  1992 Mazda MPV  mileage: 94,000.  I have a 1992 Mazda MPV.  It has a 3.0L V6 engine with 94,000 miles.  When I start it up cold, the engine makes a tapping noise for about one to two minutes.  As the engine warms up, the noise goes away.  When you raise the hood and listen, the noise seems to be loudest near the valve cover on the passenger side.  The engine does not use any oil between changes (3,000 miles), and is very quiet when warmed up.  Is this noise anything to be concerned about?  What can be done to remedy this problem?

Answer:    From what you describe, you have a hydraulic lifter that is failing.  Replacing it should fix your problem.
