Mazda B2600 Truck Repair Questions and Answers

Question:  1992 Mazda B2600I  mileage: 93,000.  I have a 1992 Mazda pick-up model B2 600i, 4 cylinder, fuel injected, It has 93,000 miles and has been well maintained.  My problem started about 2 months ago and I have not been able to resolve it.  The problem is that occasionally the engine decides to oscillate rpms when placed in gear (it is a manual transmission), and on some occasions it takes numerous start attempts to get the engine to run on its own and I have to let it warm up for 15 minutes before being able to drive it.  Once running it will vary in power when downshifting, while coming to a stop it will suddenly lurch forward.  This problem is not a constant thing it just comes and goes.  There is no common time of occurrence, such as only when the engine is cold or only hot etc.  I have had a mechanic put the engine on an analyzer and it did not reveal any problems.  I replaced the plugs, wires, fuel filter, catalytic converter, and have added slick 50-fuel treatment along with running only 93-octane gas, none of this has solved the problem.  I am stumped please help with some advice.  Thanks, Ron

Answer:  From what you have described, we believe that your problem is a faulty oxygen sensor.

Question:  1987 Mazda B2600 2.6L mileage: 150,000. I just completely overhauled the engine had it bored out to ten thousandths of and inch, put a remanufactured head on it, new pistons, cut the crank with new rods and mains. When I reassembled everything, I was extremely careful to torque every bolt to the specs that I have in my repair manual. After I got everything together and ran the engine, I found that the engine was overheating with or without the thermostat installed. I have good flow through the radiator and no leakage past the rings or through the head gasket. It is not leaking antifreeze anywhere. Please help

Answer:  Here are some things to check. Is the ignition timing adjusted properly? Is there exhaust gases in the cooling system? That can be easily checked by a radiator repair center with a sample of coolant with engine running. Is the fan clutch engaging when the engine is hot?

Question:  1989 Mazda B2600 4x4, 150,000 miles. I want to rebuild the engine and have the clutch replaced. There is no major problems with either the engine or clutch; it burns some oil but probably normal amounts for the mileage. What is a ballpark figure that this would cost, and what are the degrees of re-build; do I need to specify certain procedures? What is normally done in a re-build? The rest of the truck is in good shape. Thanks in advance.

Answer:  The price for a quality engine rebuild and new clutch, parts and labor varies and you should get a few estimates. The following labor should be done or parts replaced: hot tank block, bore and hone block, new pistons and rings, regrind crank, resize rods, new rod and main bearings, resurface head, grind valves, new timing belt or chain, new oil pump, new clutch and pressure plate, resurface flywheel, boil and rod-out radiator and new water pump.
