MORE: Mazda 929 Repair Questions

Question: 2002 Mazda 929 mileage: 87,000 I have had (2) two rear wheel drive transmissions put in my car. When the car gets hot, the transmission goes out. Am I getting bad transmissions?

Answer: We always examine a failed transmission to determine why it failed. Transmissions can fail for a number of reasons. When a transmission is replaced, the transmission cooler in the radiator must be flushed out to keep shrapnel from the failed transmission out of the new transmission. If the flush is not done and shrapnel gets in, the life of the new transmission will be drastically shortened. By the way, you should select a qualified transmission expert to work on the transmission in your car, as it is a highly technical one.

Question: 1999 Mazda 929 mileage: 107,000. Here is a question for you Mazda engineers. From 1st gear to 2nd, or from a complete stop (such as a stop light) and you give the car gas, should the Rpms jump from 2000 to 3000-4000 RPMS? I can understand a gradually climb, but my car first hesitates and then jumps to like between 3000 and 4000 rpms and then shifts. Also on the highway if you want to change lanes, it does same if you give her some gas. I have taken the car to the mechanic and was told that the transmission was fine, but I think their idea of fine means if the car moves. So, for peace of mind sake, I had the transmission flushed, but the same problem remains. Should I be looking at the fuel injectors maybe the car isn't getting enough gas or have the transmission checked again?

Answer: If your car is equipped with a manual transmission the clutch is in need of replacement. If you have an automatic transmission, it may need to be rebuilt.

Question: 1998 Mazda 929  mileage: 96,000. My 1998 Mazda 929 shifts very hard going into 2nd gear. One dealer is telling me there is a small hand held machine that you can hook up to the car's computer and it will tell you if there is a problem with the transmission. Another dealer you can look for a light on the dash. This light is supposed to flash a code that tells you what is wrong with the transmission. If this is true, is it possible that the light is burned out or is not working? Thank you for your response, I am very desperate for an honest answer!

Answer: Your car has both systems. You can hook up a code scanner that you can purchase for under $80 and it will read the computer and clear the codes after you make the necessary repairs. This device is a real money saver. It works on all cars 1996 and newer. You can cycle the computer and it will flash the light on the dash, but it wont' clear the codes for you. Either way, you will be able to read a fault code to identify the problem.

Question:  2000 Mazda 929  mileage: 102,000.  My automatic transmission is slipping in low speed usually on takeoff, it revs up to 4000 rpms before shifting, I’ve already had the transmission position sensor replaced, but that did not solve the problem, the mechanic thinks it's possible that the torque converter needs to be replaced.  What do you think?   Is it possible that this transmission will have to be rebuilt or is it something minor.  Thanks

Answer:    From what you describe, you may need to have your transmission rebuilt.

Question:  1999 Mazda 929  mileage: 137,000. During normal driving, hold light for transmission starts blinking on and off. At the same time, the speedometer stops working. Then for no apparent reason everything works fine.

Answer: Your car is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system. An independent auto service center can scan your computer for fault or error codes. The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components. The speedometers in these cars are operated via a cable, which comes out of the glove box. If you look under the car (drivers side) you can see it. It sounds like the speedometer cable (this also causes the speedometer to stop working and also for the hold light to start flashing). Check to see if it has worked itself loose, other thing it could be is at the other end. It plugs directly into the back of the speedometer, you have to take out the dash and it is possible it may have come loose.
