Jeep Wagoneer Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1988 Jeep Wagoneer Ltd 4.0 mileage: 145,000. Installed a trailer hitch and have a problem with wiring a 3 pole connector. 3 types tried so far with no luck. Latest is a plug-in type for an 1988 Comanche. Taillights are different. My Jeep has 3 -2 pole lights each side and no matter how I wire in the adaptor, can not get trailer to use two poles. I.e. turn signals and taillights work but no brake lights, or lights dim when engaging brake. Am getting frustrated nd poor! p.s. there are 4 wires in main bundle to the ear with brake signals, have tried all 4. Help!

Answer: We would guess that there is insufficient ground from the Jeep to the trailer lights. Run a ground wire from the frame of the Jeep to the housing for the lights on the trailer.

Question: 1988 Jeep Wagoneer 4.0L mileage: 133,096.  This problem started happening when the weather got extremely cold.  When I first start the engine, I can smell gas.  I can smell it for about 20 minutes after the truck is running.  I checked on the ground below the engine and I do not see any signs of a leak.  There were other days when it was not as cold, and I did not smell a thing.

Answer:Get your car inspected immediately.  Leaking gasoline is an extreme fire hazard.  Especially have the seals on the fuel injectors checked.

Question: 1988 Jeep Wagoneer:  My Jeep as I am driving acts as if it is out of gas.  We changed fuel pump, filter and I thought we had the vacuum lines checked however I took it to be in the diagnostic machine and have sensors tested but the man manually tested all except 2 that he says he could not reach because of their locations somewhere around the transmission, Do you know what 2 sensors they are?  My Jeep runs and when it hits a bump is when it most likely acts like it I running out of fuel the rpm drops to 1 and putt, putt we go until I sometimes keep my foot on the gas and it takes off again okay or sometimes I’ll hit another bump and it goes okay.  Please help?

Answer:    Your car is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system.  An independent auto service center can scan your computer for fault or error codes.  The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components and or sensors.  The problem that you are having may be caused by one of the wiring looms for the engine management system shorting out against the engine or frame.  Check for damaged insulation on the wiring looms.

Question: 1984 Jeep Wagoneer 2.8/v-6 mileage: many.  Transmission shifts fine in warm weather.  However, when it is cold out it does not want to shift out.  It will shift into second after a while but can take 10 miles to go into third.  "HELP".   Have changed filter and fluid.

Answer: Since you have already changed the filter and fluid, and you are still having problems, you may be ready for a transmission overhaul.
