Question: 1980 jeep J-10 pickup
258 mileage: 114,000. Gentlemen, My once trusty Jeep has
been sitting for a while now and is badly out of time,
or so it seems. It will start, but it misses badly. I
cannot even move the truck for it will stall. I have
checked the plugs and wires, which were all recently
replaced, and even the cap and rotor, which all seem in
good condition. Get this, I can even remove one of the
plug wires while it is running, and it runs the same!
I'm really confused. Any help you can give me would be
greatly appreciated.
Answer: Have the computer scanned for trouble
codes to isolate the problem. You may need to replace
the spark plug wires and do a major tune-up.
Question: 1980
Jeep J-10 mileage: 155,000. It is a standard
transmission. Sometimes it will not start. He'll turn
the key and the starter sounds like its working and the
engine is turning over but it doesn't spark. I question
whether the engine is really turning over. He can push
start it, popping the clutch while turning the ignition
key on. It starts. By push starting it isn't the only
thing he is doing is physically forcing the engine to
turn over? Is it possible that the starter shaft is not
extending into the engine and turning over the engine;
that the starter is turning but is not engaged with the
engine and that would be a solenoid problem? I admit I
do not know much about it, but he cannot seem to get it
fixed. Thanks for listening.
Answer: The first
test to try is to look at the radiator fan while the
engine is trying to start. (Stay clear of the fan).
If the fan turns, the starter is okay. If not, replace
the starter and solenoid. If the starter test is okay,
check for 12 volts at the positive terminal of the coil
while cranking the engine. If no voltage, you may have a
bad ignition switch.
Question:
1980 Jeep J-10 mileage: 220,000. I had a problem
with the heat. I replaced the thermostat and still
have the same problem. My temperature gauge also
confirms I am running much cooler than the 195 degree
t-stat setting. I also partially blocked the
radiator to see if I could get the temperature up, but
that did nothing as well. Could it be a faulty t-stat or
should I look elsewhere?
Answer:
You may have a faulty thermostat or possibly incorrect
gauge readings. Remove the thermostat and check it
when it is cold to see that it is closed. Put the
thermostat in a pan of hot water on a stove. The
thermostat should be open when the water is near
boiling. If the thermostat is okay, the
temperature sensor may be your problem.
