Jaguar Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1997 Jaguar XJ6  mileage: 122,000. I'm having a problem with the fuel system on my jag. Recently when I drive it some place, when I go to leave it won't start, I have spark but it just turns over and won't fire. I swapped the run and start relays and it started once and then when I shut it off the same problem occurred when I tried to restart it. But if I unplug the electrical connections on the fuel pump in the trunk then plug them back in the car will start and run fine until I turn it off. I'm getting kind of tired of taking my trunk apart to get to my fuel pump every time I go someplace. If you can help, I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Joshua

Answer: You may have a faulty fuel pump. When the car will not start, check for 12 volts at the fuel pump. If 12 volts are present, your fuel pump is the culprit.

Question:  1998 Jaguar XJ6  mileage: 110,000.  During hot weather, the oil pressure at idle speed drops to near nothing.  During cooler weather, I do not see this fluctuation.  Is this an oil cooler thermostat problem?

Answer:  The oil pressure fluctuation is normal for an engine with 110,000.  Try using 20/50 motor oil during the summer.

Question:  1997 Jaguar XJ6  mileage: 15,000.  I had the engine rebuilt and the tanks recoated and then it sat.  It is not a car that is driven every day.  But anyway I took the car to someone to repair it and at first they said it was the fuel pumps weren't getting enough power then they said that the tubing connecting the pump to the main line was the wrong type of tubing so the replaced it and the car ran fine for a day.  When gas/starter fluid is sprayed into the carburetor, it runs.   Sometimes it runs for five minutes but eventually cuts off.  Could you please give me at least three possible solutions?

Answer:  With the engine running, check the voltage at the fuel pumps.   If you have less than 14-volts at the pumps, you undoubtedly have a bad connection in the wiring or the switches that control the pumps.  If you have 14-volts and you are having a fuel supply problem, you may be having fuel pump failure.

Question:  1996 XJS Jaguar  mileage: 91,000.  Car starts fine, idles a little rough. 1/4 into throttle it feels like some one is pulling the coil wire.  Push it a little more and it clears up until the engine levels out.  If you back off to almost idle you can drive it.  It seems to get worse as you drive it.  This is my first V12 Jag.   Could the distributor module be breaking down?  P.S. sometimes it runs fine for a bit.  Thanks for the help.

Answer:  The map sensor (manifold absolute pressure) may not be enriching the mixture when the manifold pressure (vacuum) drops which could cause the very lean condition that you are experiencing.  Replacing the map sensor should fix your problem.

Question: 1970 Jaguar V12 E-Type 5.3 mileage: 26,000. I am having a challenge with my brakes. When I apply the brake pedal, the brakes stay on for between 30 - 50 seconds after releasing the pedal, before they release. Have had the car for about 26 years, do all my repairs, and have for the 26 years. I have recently overhauled the master cylinder and the servo and fitted a new revac valve, any suggestions?

Answer: We would suspect that brake pressure is being held in the system keeping the brakes applied after the pedal is released. This is probably a result of the master cylinder not returning all the way back. Check the brake leakage that actuates the master cylinder for proper adjustment.

Question:  1991 Jaguar XJ6  mileage: 90,000.  Lately I am smelling a strong gasoline odor in and out of the car, I have checked for leaks, I found none.  The odor is there with either left or right gas tank.  Thank you

Answer:  A gasoline odor in the rear of the car by the gas tanks would indicate checking the rubber fuel lines that are inside the spare tire wheel well.  They are located behind the cover.

Question:  1992 Jaguar V-6 mileage: 107,000.  My jaguar has a factory alarm.  I do not have a beeper to disarm it.  I removed battery from car to charge it.  Upon returning battery to car, alarm activated itself.  Dealer told me to turn ignition switch on and off 5 times.  Jaguar mechanic said unlock doors 5 times and I was told to take battery cable on off on.  However, none of these things works.  HELP HELp HElp Help help hel he h ..........

Answer:   Your alarm should be able to be reset by locking and unlocking the driver’s door with the key from the outside.

Question:  1998 Jaguar XJ6  mileage: 93,000.   How do I replace the rear shocks. I cannot seem to find out where the shock shaft penetrates the floor of the car.

Answer: The top of the shocks are hooked to the sub-frame.  They do not hook to the body of the car.

Question:  1997 Jaguar XJS mileage 100,000.  The car will suddenly cut off power.  Usually when turning a corner or after stopping; at a light or stop sign. I've recently replaced the alternator and the battery maintains proper voltage.  I also replaced the cold starter sensor.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer:   Here are several other things that may be causing your problem.   Fuel pump, ignition module or ignition pickup coil.

Question:  1985 jaguar XJ6 6 cylinder mileage: 100,000.  My car overheated and locked up the engine, I had been contemplating replacing the original engine with and American brand (Chevy 350) however, I now would like to rebuild the engine. What I need are the engine specifications and torque.  If you can be of any assistance, it will be highly appreciated.  Also, if you have any other suggestions please feel free to advise.

Answer:   A Mitchell or Chilton auto repair manual will have diagrams showing engine torque specifications and patterns. The manuals also give step-by-step instructions.   Visit the Click here to find out more is a good source for purchase repair manuals and books about your car.

Question:  1979 Jaguar V12 mileage 125,000. Car will die and not restart until it sits for an hour or two. What could be the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:  The ignition module is failing and may need to be replaced.
