MORE: Jaguar XJR Repair Questions

Question:    1998 Jaguar XJR V8 Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 37150 miles. The car has a keyless entry security system. Normally a red light adjacent to Park on the gear shift lever flashes intermittently when the system is armed (i.e. after I have left the car and pressed the lock button on the keyless entry fob) but now this light is steady (as opposed to flashing) and it is on all the time and none of the keyless entry security system functions work - they won't open the doors and they wont disarm the alarm. The batteries in the keyless entry fobs are only a year old . Now the car won't start at all ...any suggestions would be welcome.

Answer:    Try locking and unlocking the doors one at a time starting with the drivers, one of them should disable the alarm, even possibly the trunk

Question:    2000 Jaguar XJR V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic 65000 miles It is raining very hard in Northern CA and I used my wipers on high for I'd say maybe 20 minutes as I ran an errand. I parked the car turned it off and after I came out to go home about 1 hour later the wipers would not work. If I press the button on the end of the control arm the water shoots out, but the wipers do not move. What Happened? I did have the fuses checked, and the mechanic said they were okay. What else can I check or do to try and resolve this problem.

Answer:    Have the relays for the wipers there are two. both of them are right next to each other. behind the drivers head light next to the fans. common problem with car.

Question:    I have wind noise in the drivers door around the window seal but it doesn't appear to be the seal. The reason is, if I grab the door frame up at the top left hand corner and pull it in while I am driving I can get the wind noise to stop. the door doesn't feel loose, no play in it at all, but I can still pull it in ever so slightly and the noise is gone. Is there a way to make a driver doors adjustment so the door shuts more tightly? Again, the door is not loose but if you pull on it even an 1/8" or so it does stop the noise. I saw the post on a 2001 xj with a similar problem but they were told to replace the seal. I tried putting an additional rubber seal in the door last night and closing the door and I still had the noise. can someone shed some light?

Answer:    First if you were to adjust the door, so the seal was tighter the door line would not be correct. I do believe the problem you have is in the seal. you should replace the seal and the problem should be corrected. also they had wind noises from the mirrors also. there is a seal for these too. let me know if it helps thanks pat

Question:    I have water in my engine where the sparks are at and I cannot figure out why the water keeps going into the engine and every time i drive it steam comes out and my mechanic has replace everything and it still doing the same thing please help

Answer:    Did your mechanic replace the covers for the spark plugs if he did not. have them replaced this should take car of the problem

Question:    I have a Jaguar Xjr with about 71,000 miles on it. Last week my amber "check engine" light came on with no clear problem. I called my mechanic (and father-in-law), and of course he said to bring it down and he'd read the code. I couldn't get down there for a few days. The light went off the next morning. A day or so later it began to run hot, and to make a long story short my water pump died. I got right off the highway and had it towed. He replaced the water pump and all was well...until the amber "check engine" light came back on, then for a split second all the warning lights came on, then went off and everything was fine. I brought it in, had the code read and it was a P1638. I looked it up and all it says is "CAN link ECM/instm circuit network." My question, what does this mean, what do I do, and what will it cost?

Answer:    this code means that the can network, which is the network in which the instrument pack talks to the other modules in the car is having a problem communicating. usually if the connections are ok and the problem is just starting, the instrument pack is going bad and needs to be replaced. if you can find a used one. you would have to take to the dealer to have the keys from your car programmed to it hope this helps.

Question:    I have oil leaking on my engine and getting into the air intake. It seems to be coming from the full load breather tube (into the air intake) and possibly out of the oil filler cap. The car runs fine, but starts a little rough and blows smoke out the exhaust when 1st started. Any suggestions?

Answer:    There is a reason you have oil in the air intake tube. on the drivers cam cover or valve cover as it is known. it is plugged this is the pcv system. it I needs to be plugged, if you disconnect the vacuum line and then use a 3/32 drill bit with some brake clean. spray into the cam cover at the vacuum line. then move the drill bit in and out. this will unplug the cam cover. then you need to clean the throttle body with a rag to get the oil out of it and rinse the air tube out also. this should take care of you problem as for the smoke you have oil in the intake from the part load tube being blocked. the only way you can remove the oil is too remove the intake and turn on end and the oil will come out. it should eventually stop after cleaning the part load cleaner.

Question:    I have a customer Jaguar Xjr supercharged in with a trans fluid leak. It looks like it is coming from a wiring bulkhead going into the trans by the bell housing. The local dealership says that they sell no parts for this trans, just remand units. This seems exorbitant to me just to repair a slight leak caused by a faulty o-ring. Any help that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:    This oil leak is common. but to replace the o rings for the leak you would have to replace the connector. and the trans fluid has to be set a special way using auto trans temp to set. that would have to be done at the dealer. hope this helps

Question:    How do you set the timing on a 1998 XJR, there are no timing marks that I can see if you have any info it would be very helpful.

Answer:    Might not be adjustable. just set to 1 cyl and the computer does it all.

Question:    I have a 1998 jaguar xjr that is running hot only when driven not at idle. I have changed the thermostat, someone had put a 170 and drilled three holes in it for what I don't know, but I put the correct one in and it still ran hot so I checked the water pump (ok) im not sure were to turn from here (please help)

Answer:    Sound like you have a blown head gasket
