MORE: Jaguar XJ6 Repair Questions

Question:    1995 Jaguar XJ6 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 150,000 miles. Battery dead. Key will not unlock trunk to access battery. Need advice

Answer:    There is a power port under the hood to attach a charger or jumper cables to power the car to get the trunk open.

Question:    2004 Jaguar XJ6 6 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 50,000 miles The red indicator light is on and the display reads Bonnet Open I am not sure what this is

Answer:    If it isn't a convertible, I'm going to say that is the trunk. They (English) call the hood a "bonnet". Could be a problem with the latch assembly or pin switch for the trunk not seeing it closed

Question:    1976 Jaguar Xj6 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 000000 miles
I bought a 76 jag xj6l it starts and abruptly starts i believe that it is the fuel filter hopefully not the one in the tank but am unable to find the inline fuel filter (there should be two I'm assuming due to the duel gas tanks) could you direct me to where to look also the wiring is all chewed up and corroded and I will soon be manually replacing nearly all of it if you could direct me to where to find free schematics and wiring diagrams would be fantastic,.

Answer:    There are two metal lines running under the car, one has fuel filter in line. you can see it.

Question:    1992 Jaguar XJ6 Engine Size unknown Two Wheel Drive Automatic 120,000 miles The car is not getting fuel. I sprayed starting fluid and it runs. Since then we have changed the fuel pump and fuel filter. Still same problem.

Answer:    some aftermarket fuel pump are bad . when you turn the key on you should hear a buzz, if you don't, fuel pump is not working.

Question:    1995 Jaguar Xj6 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 120000 miles The battery is dead and located in the trunk, which opens electronically so I cannot get to it. How do I jump it from under the hood or from the engine?

Answer:    On the top left side of firewall you see a positive pole and use any part of body metal as negative.

Question:    1994 Jaguar XJ6 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 120000 miles where is the location of water pump?

Answer:    On the front of the engine with the fan hooked to it. Should be easily accessible

Question:    1990 Jaguar XJ6 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 140000 miles The car turns over, has spark and fuel flows......So why don't it start?.... I was driving and the car just stopped running, lights where still strong, battery good. It felt like it ran out of gas. No indication that anything was wrong. Thank You

Answer:    Get a voltmeter and read the open battery voltage on the battery before you start it up-should be 12.4 volts or higher, less recharge battery. Now start it up and read battery voltage should be 13.5 - 15.5 volts with headlights and heater on. If not could be the alternator again not putting out or the battery is not taking the charge. Or the field generation from the computer

Question:    1996 Jaguar XJ6 Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 137,600 miles I was told by the jag dealer that I needed 2 upstream oxygen sensors and this is why my check engine light is on. I looked and the car has 4 two near the bottom of the manifold pipe and two closer to the front. They say it's the upstream one's I need. Which one's are the up stream? Do I have to get the car scanned again after I replace them or does the light go off after I drive it a while??

Answer:    The upstream are the ones closest to the engine. they are before the cat converter. if you have the codes cleared the light will go right out, or it will take several drive cycles to clear on its own. if you want you don't have to go to jag to have it cleared. your local auto zone can do it for you for free, or you can purchase a generic obd2 code reader and do it yourself for about 50$.

Question:    1984 Jaguar Xj6 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 97,500 miles HI, I just received a Jaguar Xj6 from a friend. 1984 It will not start right after you turn it off. The battery is new but car has not been run in awhile. We did jump it but it took some time to charge and at one point it would die when taking the battery jumper cables off. Any suggestions would help. THANKS

Answer:    Have the battery fully charged and load tested, also check the alternator charge rate, to make sure that it will charge the battery when running, if the battery is dead flat and the alternator is not working, the engine will shut off when you remove the jumper battery as there is insufficient voltage to keep the fuel pump & ignition system running.

Question:    1994 Jaguar Xj6 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 78,000 miles. Something is draining my battery. Our tire shop checked out the battery, alternator, etc and said everything was okay. Next day battery was dead again. There is one clue, but nobody knows what it means re the battery. An amber light stays on that says "bulb failure". Can't see any bulbs that are out. Got any ideas?

Answer:    Place an Amp gauge between battery (+) and the battery cable, check amp draw with doors closed & key off, (you may need to remove boot light globe for this test) If Amp draw is over .25 Amps start pulling fuses to isolate the suspect circuit, the globe out warning may be a faulty relay stuck on causing the current draw.

Question:    1990 Jaguar Xj6 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 120,000 miles My mother in law just gave us her 1990 XJ6 Jaguar. She had everything from the brakes, fluids, plugs, etc. changed on the car. She said that the battery is new as well. However, The first week that we had the car, we could start it without a problem. The holidays hit and we did not go anywhere for 4 days. We go to start the car on the 4th day and the car would not start. In the beginning there was a clicking noise like it was starting to turn over. We did not try to jump start the car first. We wanted to read the manual to make sure that a jag could be jumpstarted. After a few hours, we tried to jumpstart the car, but the car would not turn over. You could hear the car pulling from our other vehicle, but it still would not start. The lights, radio, and seat belts still work. Is this problem possibly the battery or something else?

Answer:    I would fully charge the battery and then load test it. this will prove the integrity of the battery. It is always better to try a charged batter first, rather than a jump start. You may have to pull the spark plugs and clean them as they now may be fouled with fuel and carbon, this will make the engine hard to start as well.

Question:    1997 Jaguar XJ6 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 200000 miles Air condition and heater blowers working fine but do not blow hot when engine warms up the just blow cold, have checked fuses but seem ok, windscreen washers not working have taken tube from jet but no water is pumping through from bottle to washer unit, have checked fuses but seem ok.

Answer:    Okay start by locating the thermostat and test or replace it and go from there-could also be a heater control valve, actuators, and vacuum hoses-that controls the air mix/blend door.

Question:    I have a 1999 Jaguar Xj6 with approximately 81,000 miles. Within the last 2 months when turning slowly (parking) I hear a creaking noise from the steering wheel that sounds like it needs lubrication as you would a creaky door. I asked a Jaguar mechanic and he said as long as there is no play in the steering or if the steering is not wobbly there shouldn't be a concern. Last night when driving the creaking noise was more pronounced and after parking and turning off the engine the car was making a continuous semi-loud ticking/pinging noise for about 15 minutes? Do you have any idea what this could be? Is it safe to drive without causing further damage (after hearing the ticking noise, I am concerned about starting the engine)? and do you have a ball park figure of the repair cost?

Answer:    The pinging and ticking is the exhaust system cooling down, not a concern! The steering noise could be a slightly worn U-Joint on the column...

Question:    1991 Jaguar Xj6 Engine Size unknown Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 160,000 miles. I just replaced my fuel pump, however, the gas tank straps are not reaching the place where I need to attach the bolts to. HELP

Answer:    Make sure that the fuel tank is sitting hard up into the body well, the filler is not cocked and tilting the tank. Hold the tank in place with timber block and a floor jack, this will free up your hands to make sure the straps are free and you should be able to secure the tank.

Question:    1970 Jaguar XJ6 V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic. How do you remove the rear brake calipers without removing the whole rear end ? is this possible.?

Answer:    If the calipers are inboard next to the rear diff then no you would have to remove calipers. if you are just replacing pads there should be two pins on each caliper you can remove to replace the pads hope it helps
