Isuzu Trooper Car Repair Questions and Answers

Question:    1997 Isuzu Trooper 6 cyl four wheel drive Automatic 148,000 miles. I have a 1997 Isuzu Trooper. I have noticed that the Check Engine Light comes on after driving for about an hours time whether it be on the highway or while I am running errands. When the light comes on it seems that there's a very slight irregularity when the car downs shifts and I also notice a thump kind of noise towards the rear of the car when I come to a stop. I have also noticed that when driving on the highway sometimes the RPM's fluxuate a little bit when the Check Light comes on. I have also noticed on two occasions that when I put the car in park the RPM's go above 2000. When I park the car overnight the next morning the light is off and there are no signs of problems and it only comes on with problems stated above after driving for about an hour. I took the car into Pep Boys for free Check Engine Light Service and the code they pulled up was P0122-TPS. During their attempt to repair, the incompetent mechanics broke of a bolt in the throttle body and said they would charge me extra to have it removed. By the way this is the second time such a problem has occurred with Pep Boys. So instead of having their incompetent mechanics do any further damage to my car, I told them forget about doing the repair. The mechanic said that this was not a serious problem, but after my two previous experiences with them I just can trust a single word they say. Please HELP! Thank You.

Answer:    TPS is your throttle body position sensor and it tells your computer where your foot is on the pedal . when this goes bad all kinds of funny things will happen with your vehicle, like the fluctuating of the rpms. fuel economy will also be effected so you need to have this repaired.

Question:    2000 Isuzu Trooper V8 four wheel drive Automatic 159,000 miles. My car was starting to show symptoms of a transmission problem about 2 1/2 months ago. When nearing between 40-50 mph it had delayed shifting and would then jump forward. It also had a delay when shifting into reverse occasionally and would jump backwards. My last trans fluid flush and fill was in March of 2007. Since then my vehicle has driven back and forth to Texas twice and to Colorado and up a mountain. I called the dealership to have the fluid checked and they felt that instead I should fix the transmission range sensor. The fluid was never even checked. Would the transmission range sensor be causing my shifting problems, or at least is that a possibility?

Answer:    Sure is. If the PCM doesn't know what gear it is in it may not be able to shift it properly or provide the correct up and down shift points. if the dealer suggested this, there may be a problem with them to want to do that without even servicing it

Question:    1989 Isuzu Trooper 4 cyl four wheel drive Manual 203,593 miles. My Isuzu trooper backfired when i tried to pull out onto the highway. when it backfired the car shut off and it will turn over but wont run. we got it to run for about 30 seconds then it cut off again it has quit backfiring when we try to crank it but when it did backfire smut came out of the muffler.

Answer:    A lean or rich mixture could cause backfiring-try checking the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel pump//fuel filter.

Question:    1998 Isuzu Trooper 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 110,000 miles The "check engine light" turned on on my 98 trooper. After getting home, I checked and topped all fluids. The "engine light" turned OFF. I took the vehicle for a ride (~1 hr) and the light turned back on. The vehicle is NOT riding or idling rough. What could this be? Could it be a bad sensor or blow fuse? Thanks!

Answer:    1st check gas cap and make sure its on and tight and if that didn’t work you need to have it scanned for codes your local part store or repair shop can help you getting the codes you can post them back here more help if needed good luck

Question:    1993 Isuzu Trooper 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 298542 miles It's been about 4 years since my truck has been running, and I just got it running, and I need to give it a transmission flush, I have the stuff, but I'm lost on where the drain plug is. can anyone help?

Answer:    If there is no drain plug on the pan of transmission then you have to remove the transmission pan to get the fluid out.

Question:    1993 Isuzu Trooper 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 200,000 miles. replaced the front brake pads, compressed calipers with caliper tool (slowly). after about 20 miles, brakes got noisey and smelled hot. abs light is on and off. is there a bleeding sequence to correct this?

Answer:    Compressing the calipers sometimes pushes them back into a part in the caliper bore where rust has built up and now the piston is stuck. remove wheels and see if they are sticking, if they are replace the calipers.

Question:    1998 Isuzu Trooper, power lock, windows and sunroof. Keyless remote will only unlock the driver side door and not all four doors. Same thing with locking. However, the manual lock/unlock switch works on the driver side (unlocks/locks all doors) but not on the passenger side (will lock/unlock passenger side only). Maybe the passenger side is normal behavior. Battery was replaced a few months ago, but as this car was a gift from family, we are unsure if the keyless problem occurred before or after the battery switch. Have tried reprogramming the keyless remote with a How-To I found elsewhere but either I am doing it wrong or the directions are incorrect because there is not change in functionality. Since the door switch works on the driver side (unlocks/locks all doors) I do not think this is a mechanical issue but then again, I'm not a Trooper expert.

Answer:    The 1st thing that happens before you unlock or lock the doors is the key FOB will send a program signal to the body controller to identify the radio frequency signal and digital code process it then activates the door actuator to move the latch up and down. In your case other areas such as windows/sunroof being affected-could possibly be that you have a power issue involving circuit breaker and the master switch. If it was mechanical I don't think it will affect all the doors-its unlocking and locking thru the use of the switch. To draw conclusion-I will say the communications between the key FOB and the Body Controller.

Question:    1995 Isuzu Trooper 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 250,000 miles I had no antifreeze fluid in the car just straight water in drain the radiator to keep it from freezing and now I have oil and water mixed together. could it be that the frozen ice inside the motor pushed my freeze plugs out. and made water and oil mixed together?

Answer:    no. if a freeze plug popped it would only leak coolant externally. most likely the crack is inside the engine.

Question:    1995 Isuzu Trooper 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 80,000 miles. lifters tap loudly. change oil every 3000 miles use synyhetic 5w-30.

Answer:    how is your oil pressure? How many lifters are tapping? more than a couple? With a 95 it is possible that they should be adjusted or replaced. Does the tapping get louder or less at different times?

Question:    2001 Isuzu Trooper 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 90,000 miles. My driver side rear brake light does not work when I push on the brake. It will come on when I unlock my vehicle ( it blinks twice) with the remote and when I have the parking brake on but if I am driving and I stop it does not come on. The other brake lights work fine. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

Answer:    You need a new bulb! What flashes is the marker and parking lamps, you either have two bulbs in there, or a double filament, with one burned out...

Question:    1992 Isuzu Trooper 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 193,00 miles. Why does my trooper idle high when I come to a light.

Answer:    Check for a sticking throttle plate, or cable...

Question:    2000 Isuzu Trooper 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 116,592 miles We were in a flood last summer and while leaving our home we had to drive through a few feet of tidewater. A few months ago, the truck stopped going into overdrive. At around 70 mph the check trans light comes on. I've been changing the transmission fluid as much as I can at a time, draining the trans. pan and refilling with trans fluid, (about 2qts at a time.) This seems to help smooth the shifting between the 1st few gears, but it still won't go into overdrive.

Answer:    Try checking the electrical connectors at the tranny! If you drove thru salt water, it is very corrosive to electronics!

Question:    1999 Isuzu Trooper Engine Size unknown Four Wheel Drive Manual 114ooo miles I have 1999 trooper when i start it up there is no oil pressure sometimes it will rise after a short distance I have just had the turbo replaced it was ok until next day when I started it up and there was no oil pressure again.

Answer:    if you don't have the means to check the oil pressure by using gauge try to replace the oil pressure switch as a1st step
