MORE: Infiniti G20 Repair Questions

Question:    I have a 1993 Infiniti G20 (131k miles). On Sunday I drove it for a while to get gas, when I turned the car to leave the gas station, it decided not to start. I put the key in and started the ignition. I can turn my key all the way to the start position and, although all the diagnostic lights turn on as usual, there are no noises or clicks. I tested the battery and it's fine. I had someone else try to replace the starter, and that seems to be working fine. At this point I'm running out of money (my scholarship ended so I have tuition to pay for as well) and options. Can anyone please tell me what else could be wrong?

Answer:    Check for corroded or loose connections on the battery, starter and relay. since you say the starter is good, try putting +12v direct from battery with jumper cables, does the starter turn? if so then you should replace the starter relay.

Question (Follow Up):    that worked thanks!!

Question:    1994 Infiniti G20 96,000 miles while checking something else, found both front CV boot broken and grease leaking. Appears to be recent. No obvious abnormal-no driving noise or jerking. Question: should I repack the joint and replace the boots only or replace the whole thing-CV axle (over $600 estimate). Are there shops doing repacking; Where to find cheap part of CV axle if necessary, given that the car is old. Thanks!

Answer:    It is a guessing game on replacing the boots. Chances are good if it appears the boots are still holding grease and not all of it has been spun out. Safe way is to go with a couple of remand axles. Junk yard is a possibility but still a crap shoot. The majority of the cost in either case is in labor. There are CV boots available that can be installed without removing the axle...I have not used them myself, but have seen them used and appear to work.

Question:    1996 Infiniti G20 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 84,250 miles I had the rear rotors and pads replaced at a local shop. The problem i have is when they get wet due to a snow storm or a rainy day, the brakes will surge while I'm at a complete stop. Also the car will surge forward a couple of feet.

Answer:    The brake pedal drops will at a stop? No ABS light? Sounds like a vacuum booster leak, if I understand you right.

Question:    1996 Infinity G20 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 162 miles when I first got it did not knock as much as it do now at first the guy said that it was probably a cv joint that need replacing but we have notice that the sounds is coming no longer from the wheel and it is coming from the engine I was told it might be a lift that lift the cams up and down then I was told that I might need oil the oil is full a little dirty but filled what do you think is my problem

Answer:    What is the octane rating of the gas that you put in the car. The octane rating it very important, here is why...Many people do not know what octane is or how it works- you are about to learn--
Octane is an additive oil companies put is gasoline. Gasoline is very explosive, and when you compress it, it spontaneously explodes. Octane simply put, prevents this spontaneous explosion. The higher the octane level, the less spontaneous explosion. Why is this important? When your piston, inside of your engine, is coming up to the top of the cylinder, it is compressing the gas/air mixture. If this mixture explodes as the piston is on the way up, before the spark plug ignites it, this causes what we describe as fuel ping or a knock. This also will cause severe damage to the engine in time. Run your tank down to almost empty and try a higher octane fuel. If this doesn't do the trick let me know and we will take it from there.... BTW--Dirty oil means that the oil is doing its' job--that is good. What is not good is to go over 3000 or 5000 miles without changing it!

Question:    2000 Infinity G20 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 130,00 miles The car had a tune up a few months ago with a new a new air filter and spark plug wires. Acceleration and gas mileage are great. The problem, is when I'm at a stop light after 60 seconds I get a sudden drop in the RPM, this last for a second for almost every 60 second I'm stopped at light, but the car does not die out. This only happens when the car has been driven for at least 20 minutes. When I put the car in park the same thing, but the rpm drop low enough for the car to die. What is this?

Answer:    With no check engine light, this would be a guess, but not unusual, check your Idle air control valve, it's bolted to the side of the throttle body. Also could be a vacuum leak, but it should happen all the time!

Question:    1993 Infinity G20 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 225000 miles I don't think my alternator is charging properly. While the car is running, a test showed the alt putting out only 11.06 volts and steadily dropping. When the car was off, the battery was close to 12 volts. Is there anything else to consider before I take the alt out?

Answer:    Get a voltmeter and read the open battery voltage on the battery before you start it up-should be 12.4 volts or higher, less recharge battery. Now start it up and read battery voltage should be 13.5 - 15.5 volts with headlights and heater on. If not could be the alternator again not putting out or the battery is not taking the charge. Or the field generation from the computer.

Question:    1991 Infiniti G20 4 cyl Two wheel drive Automatic 199,000 miles Engine cranking but won't start. I've checked the ignition coil, it's got good spark and looks ok. Can you please help me with this problem.

Answer:    Are you getting bright blue spark at the #1 spark plug. also try starting fluid sprayed in the throttle body. post back your results. Also any recent repairs lately?
