Repair Questions and Answers

Question:
2000 Infiniti I30 mileage: 73,000. When I get home
from driving, I smell a burnt smell, almost like burnt
wires, but it goes away right away.
Answer: We think that the valve cover
gaskets are leaking allowing oil to seep onto the
exhaust manifolds.
Question: 2001 Infiniti M30 V6 3.0
mileage: 155,000. I have been struggling with a cooling
problem for 3+ years - new thermostat, rodded radiator
(didn't need it), new water pump (leaking-but problem
existed before and after water pump replaced) electric
fan operates perfectly. New radiator cap runs hotter
when AC is on or stopped in traffic. NOTE: I am not
losing any coolant. Now it's also running hotter even in
winter months. How do I know if I have exhaust in
coolant? Or, how do I know if catalytic converter is
clogged. P.S. I had transmission rebuilt and I am using
an external cooler for the transmission (again this
cooling problem existed before and after transmission
was rebuilt I will get a magnetic thermometer to put on
radiator cap to check temp. at radiator VS temp gauge on
dash. Thanks for your website. Zula
Answer: Most auto parts stores sell
a kit to test for exhaust in the cooling system. To test
for a plugged converter, drill a small hole in the
exhaust pipe right before the catalytic converter.
Install a temporary hose fitting and attach a long
rubber hose and a 0 to 10 pound pressure gauge. With the
gauge inside the car, drive up a hill or accelerate and
read the pressure. Normal is 2 to 3 pounds, restricted 4
pounds or higher. The drawback to this method is the
small hole will need to be welded shut after the test; a
minor job if you have a welder.
Question: 1995 Infiniti G20 1.8
mileage: 101,000. Automatic Transmission. I purchased
this car brand new and the first signs of transmission
problems began yesterday. Once the car gets up to 55MPH,
the RPM jumps from 2500 to 4500 and the transmission
won't budge -- it tries to shift, but is unable to. The
only way to make it from point A to B is by going under
55MPH, and as you know, this won't work on the
Washington DC Beltway. I have taken it to a local
Infiniti dealership and they said everything checks out
fine and that they test-drove it. Well, they misinformed
me, b/c when I picked up the car, I checked the mileage,
and found that they hadn't driven it. They said they
tested everything out on their computer and everything
tested out. Help!
Answer: You might try having the
transmission serviced (fluid and filter change).
However, we would bet that the transmission is starting
to fail in your car. Maybe you can trade it in at the
dealership that said the car was fine.
Question:
1999 Infiniti G20 mileage: 106,000. Bob/Ken,
What needs to be done to remove the starter on the G-20?
The bolts that hold it come in from the opposite
direction and I can barely see one of them, let alone
get a socket on it. I have pinpointed the starting
problem to the solenoid...but starter and solenoid are
sold as a unit, which is o k..., but I still need to
remove the starter. Can this be done at home, with
the car up on ramps or is this a job for the dealer..
Answer:
If you have any doubts, it would be better and safer to
have the work done by a reliable service center or
dealer. However, it you feel comfortable with your
ability, a Mitchell, online repair
manual for your make of car
will have diagrams showing what you are looking for.
The manuals and books give step-by-step instructions.

Question:
1995 Infiniti J30 VG 30DE mileage: 39,500. After
reading your answers regarding battery drain, it
certainly seems feasible that this is certainly the
problem I am having with my J30. I have had the
car towed to the dealer at least three times and he
assures me that they have checked everything they can.
They recharged the battery and after a period of a month
and a half, it starts all over again. I picked it
up again today and the report read--after charging
battery completely performed extensive tests on charging
and starting system. Found no draw in system and
found no reason for battery to go dead at this time.
Cannot recommend any repairs at this time. The
first time it was brought in they replaced the control
unit--hybrid. Well, it certainly did not solve the
problem. I would appreciate any help you could
possibly provide.
Answer:
After reading your question and discussing it, we feel
your battery may be faulty. A load-test of the
battery may or may not determine that your battery is
defective. If it fails the load test it is
obviously your battery and if it load test okay, it
still may be the battery. The reason for this is
that an internal short may or may not show up with a
load test.
