MORE: Hyundai Elantra Repair Questions

Question:    2002 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 165,000 miles. Transmission will not separate from block only half inch. Is there something that I am doing wrong. Tranny mounts removed. cables removed. Trans axles pulled. Please reply

Answer:    You will have to ensure ever thing is undone, if the transmission will retract evenly then it will be seized in the splines of the clutch disc or something is hanging up on the transmission externally, i would support the transmission and lever evenly from side to side to make sure the splines are free it should just slide straight out.

Question:    2002 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 178,000 miles how do I compress the rear calipers without a c clamp?

Answer:    Crack the bleeder and try hitting it with a board and hammer, but I suggest use a c clamp. you could also use a vice.

Question:    2006 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 24900 miles Various repairs were completed on an 06 Hyundai Elantra in November 07 due to an accident damaging the front passenger side/corner of the vehicle. Vehicle appeared to be running normally afterwards. February 08, a knocking sound that seemed to be coming from the steering column during turns was diagnosed as "loose strut bolts that hold the right knuckle". They were tightened and the sound has not returned. Could the loose bolts be a result of them not being tightened properly during the Nov 07 repair? This was the theory of the Feb 08 mechanic, but it seems like something like that would have shown up earlier. What other things might cause the bolts to be loose? I think it's great that a website like this exists, so I made a donation to show my appreciation.

Answer:    IF the bolts weren't torqued correctly it could show them loosening at any point. I think that is the case.

Question:    2001 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 80,000 miles I accidentally overfilled my elantra with a quart too much oil and now it is leaking from the front of the engine somewhere could the seals have blown out from too much oil. What does overfilling a car with oil do to it?

Answer:    it builds up high crankcase pressure and you probably blew out the front crank seal or cam seal.

Question:    I have a 2000 Hyundai elantra with 150000 miles on it. I left work one day and got on it pretty hard and shifted into second and the clutch started to slip. I assumed the clutch was going out since the car has never had one put in. Took it to a local mechanic and it was just the slave cylinder. Clutch worked great for about three weeks then started acting up again. My dad and I bled the system and it fixed it again for about another three weeks. It will not slip in first gear but it will in the rest of them. It is not consistent in the slipping either. Under easy driving conditions there are no problems, but if I try to pass anybody and shift with the rpm's up it will start to act up again. I figure if the clutch is going out it would slip consistently and steadily get worse which is not the case. I would like to know if its possible that I got a defective cylinder, if it could possibly be the master cylinder or if I just need to bleed the system again. There are no problems getting it in gear either, and the pedal is very high, higher than normal. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:    If re bleeding the system improves the problem then you would suspect that the master cyl was faulty, re inspect the slave cylinder well, is the fluid level dropping ? if so check the rear seal around where the master cylinder push rod is for leaks.

Question:    1999 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 100,000 miles. My Elantra has a small hole in the head gasket, repairs are estimated at $900-$1,000.00. I just spent $500.00 to have CV boots replaced on both wheels. With the mileage as it is do you recommend I repair & sale or keep putting money into it. I wonder if the engine is next?

Answer:    Id keep it has a few miles left to go at least 75,000 if its well maintained! sounds like a reasonable price also.

Question:    1997 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 80000 miles while driving sometimes the engine lamp turns on. once I turned the car off the lamp goes off . once I turned the car on the lamp is off

Answer:    For starters scan the PCM (computer) scanned for codes. If the PCM sees a problem it will store a code that will help in diagnosing the problem, get back with the exact codes.

Question:    1996 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 130000 miles. Evening, looking for a little advice, last night, my girlfriends car worked fine, turned over, drove like normal. Today, she goes to leave for work, and it won't start. I get home, try it myself, power's good, all dash lights, interior, radio, etc, gas-good, rolled car back a few feet (check for bad spot on solenoid, but nothing. I mean not even a click, no grinding, nothing as far as cranking goes. She says the same thing happened with her, not a peep from the engine. So I'm assuming we're talking about a bad starter, Could it perhaps be the ignition switch? I checked the fuse and relay already, no help. Please let me know what you think asap, we both work, and have school, with a baby on the way, and we got to get this girl running again asap. Thank you.

Answer:    Could be a bad starter/solenoid. Check for 12 volts at the small wire on the starter with key in crank position. If it has power then the starter needs to be replaced. If none, then get back to me and we will figure out where it stops.

Question:    I have a 2003 Hyundai Elantra with 142,000 miles. It developed a squealing when first starting up which progressively got worse. After a few weeks the squealing continued and when you turn the steering wheel, the pump will shut off and all power steering is lost. We've changed the pump, ps belt and the rack and still have the squealing problem with the pump shutting off. Does you have any idea what we should try next? This has been a very frustrating problem. We were considering changing the ball joints but are not sure if this will fix it.

Answer:    Is the P/S belt by its self or is this a serpentine belt (one belt for everything) ? If serpentine I would check the drive belt tensioner, might be too weak to hold tension against a hydraulic pump

Question:    1999 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 130,000 miles. My wife's Hyundai elantra has begun to die at stoplights. She has to keep the gas pedal depressed to keep the car running.

Answer:    first clean the fuel filter, change the plugs and the wires. if that doesn't help clean the throttle body and see if the IAC module is working .

Question:    2001 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 60000 miles I tried a c clamp and was unsuccessful. I was wondering if you had to but a kit or if there is another way of getting the caliber to compress.

Answer:    It require a special tool to turn the piston as it pushes it in C clamp will not work.

Question:    1999 Hyundai Elantra Engine Size unknown Front Wheel Drive Automatic 120,000 miles. After replacing a timing belt, I cannot reinstall the lower timing belt cover. Please help. Thank you.
