MORE: Honda Accord Repair Questions

Question:
1999 Honda Accord mileage: 96,000.  I need to replace the low beam headlight. I only found 1 screw to remove and when I loosen the screw the headlight lowers down to the base of the car.  I then cannot loosen the screw anymore for the light cannot go any lower.  The manual tells you how to replace every other light except this one.  Surely, it cannot be that difficult.  Please help if you can.

Answer:  It sounds like the screw you are trying to remove is the adjustment screw for headlight alignment not the one for removing the headlight.  We are sorry, but due to the large volume of questions we receive, we do not have time to print, scan and email diagrams.  A Mitchell or Chilton auto repair manual will have diagrams showing what you are looking for. Click here for Repair Manuals

Question:  2001 Honda Accord  mileage: 75,000.  I was driving down the freeway at 65 mph in 5th gear when suddenly the tachometer ran up on Rpms and the car acted as though it was in neutral, however the car was still in 5th gear.  Once I got the car home (not going out of 4th gear) I shifted the car through all 5 gears while the clutch was engaged and found no problems.  I can put the car in 5th and let the clutch out and nothing happens.  It will act as if it is in neutral.  Is this a linkage problem or is the problem in the transmission?  The car is in great shape and has been well taken care of since original purchase.

Answer:   From what you have described, you have internal transmission problems.  You figured it out – your fifth gear is gone.

Question:  2003 Honda Accord mileage: 30,000.  My car is pulling to the right. I have tried all ball joints and tie rod ends, lined up 2 times and replaced a wheel bearing on the right.  Nothing has worked so far.  I have checked the brakes and tire pressure.  None of the usual things seems to be wrong.  Do you have any ideas?

Answer:   The problem may be your tires.  Switch them side-to-side and see if it corrects the pulling or makes it pull to the left.  If so, replace the tires.

Question:  2002 Honda Accord  mileage: 97,000.  The problem is when the car is warm and I hit the pedal repeatedly or between shifting (stick shift), I hear valve pinging.  In addition, if I drive the car for a long time on the highway and get off the valve pinging gets worst.  I did the following to fix the problem but no success.  I changed the plugs, air filter, fuel filter and wires.  Your help is appreciated.

Answer: Your problems may be caused by incorrect valve timing or ignition timing.  Also check for proper EGR valve operation.

Question:  1998 Honda Accord  mileage: 100,000.  My question is very simple, I don’t have a repair book for my car and I need to know what the firing order for the cylinders are, so I can put in some new spark plug wires.

Answer:   We have found that the best way to keep track is just replace one spark plug wire at a time and you will be okay.

Question:  2002 Honda Accord mileage: 72,500.  After replacing hydraulic clutch master cylinder, I am left with a "dead clutch pedal".  How do I recharge/bleed the system and restore pressure to the clutch pedal?

Answer:    Open bleeder on the clutch slave cylinder and bleed the system.

Question:  1999 Honda Accord  mileage:137,890.  I had the timing belt changed at 90K.  The mechanic said the water pump checked out fine.  For the last few months, there is a squeal when the car is started.  Do not know if this is because the belts were replaced too loose or whether it is the water pump bearing.  In any case, the car occasionally overheats.  I changed the thermostat myself, in case that was causing the overheating.  Sometimes I see some drops of water on the ground under the water pump, but if it is leaking, it is not much.  If I need to have the water pump replaced, can you tell me the minimum number of other parts I need to remove (since it appears that the timing belt cover is "involved")?  For example, will I also need to remove the valve cover?  I am trying to determine if the hassle factor is low enough to do the work myself.  Thanks for any advice...

Answer:    To replace the water pump requires about the same amount of work as replacing the belt.

Question:  1998 Honda Accord  mileage: 112,000.   Recently I was driving at approx 45 mph and the engine died.  Would not turn over once car came to a stop.  I have already checked the following:  Spark Plugs, Battery, Belts, etc.  Can you suggest any help?

Answer:   Here are some things to have checked:  1.  Check to see if the timing belt has failed,  2.  Check for ignition spark at spark plugs,  3.  Check for fuel pressure.

Question:  1995 Honda Accord  mileage: 150,000.  Transmission starts out in second gear, will not shift into third or overdrive.  It has a sport light on the dash coming on for the sport & or normal transmission function.  The light does not go out when I push it to normal setting.  It will start out ok if I manually put it in low gear & then shift it too second gear.  However, it will not shift into third & or fourth.  Any suggestions on it?  P.s. I am an autotech also but have little information on this auto.

Answer:    If the transmission has 150,000 miles, the transmission may be ready for an overhaul.  If recently done, try cleaning the valve body.  A valve or servo may be “hanging up.”

Question:  2004 Honda Accord mileage: 34,000.  There is a vibration from about 60 mph on up. The radial tires were rotated and balanced recently, after which I had them re-balanced and they found one tire out by 1 ounce.  It helped reduce the vibration, but not eliminate it.  They said the tires looked good with no cupping or uneven wear.   How can I be assured a good balancing job was done or how do I find a place that can perform the best balancing?

Answer:  The tire balance may not be your problem.  Some radial tires take a “set” in the direction of rotation.  Try putting the tires back in the original location before they were switched.

Question:  1994 Honda Accord  mileage: 120,000.   I just replaced the cam, because the gear that drives the oil pump was worn out.  It ran fine started well but I noticed every once in a while it would idle bad, and misfire especially at high speed.  One day just as I pull into the driveway I noticed, smoke like oil burning from under the hood.   At first, it looked like an oil leak but I remembered it ran very rough just before I pulled into the driveway.  Now it starts very hard and when it does it smokes like burning oil from somewhere underneath the carburetor, almost as the emission system was plugged up and the fumes are not being cycled in the right direction.  Is it the e.g.r. valve?    Or some other emission component

Answer:    Check for oil leaks.  The valve cover gasket may have failed allowing oil to get on the plug wires.

Question:  1997 Honda Accord mileage: 106,000.  Every gear I shift into, the car takes an extra second, before accelerating.  I know how car felt before, and when I shifted and hit the gas the car punched into gear right away, now it hesitates, the rpm's rev up very slowly, and after a while it eventually picks up speed.  The only thing I did recently was change the air filter myself.

Answer:    If a major tune-up has not been done recently, this could be the cause of your problem.  Replace the spark plugs, plug wires, fuel and air filters, etc.  Also, replace the oxygen sensor.

Question:  1999 Honda Accord mileage: 90,000.  My speedometer is not working right.  It sometimes works but when it does it jumps around.  I think the speed sensor is bad.  What is the Best way of checking without spending $120.00 on a new one?

Answer:  The speed sensor is a small generator sending electricity to the speedometer.  You can test the speed sensor with a voltmeter.  The output will be less than one volt.

Question: 2004 Honda Accord  mileage: 51,000.   I was just told that I needed to have the gasket in my oil pan replaced - he said that I should have this done every 2 years or so and it cost me about $170 for parts and labor.  Is this true and is the cost reasonable?

Answer:  We are at a loss to understand why the pan gaskets should be done every two years.  Perhaps your oil is leaking from some other part of the engine.

Question:  1998 Honda Accord mileage: 87,000.  My car starts off well when it is cold but the moment it warms up the engine loses power. When I warm it up in the morning for more than 2 minutes, the engine does not respond when I step on the accelerator pedal. I will have to keep pumping it for the car to move. When I drive off and start reaching like 70 miles/hr, it begins to hesitate and the engine stops responding to the accelerator pedal. After slowing down to about 45 miles/hr, it begins to respond again. Holding the accelerator pedal to the floor yields a positive result sometimes. It has a carburetor and I have been told 4 times that it is no carburetor problem by my mechanic who also gave the car a complete tune-up. Now they are telling me it is the distributor. However, this car has traveled to NYC from NH 2 times. Please help.

Answer:   Your problem may be caused by a faulty ignition module in the distributor.  In addition, check fuel pump pressure and check the catalytic converter to make sure it is not “plugged” or restricted.
