Truck Repair Questions and Answers

Question: 1999 GMC Sierra
mileage: 150,000. After getting off thruway from a
fast acceleration, I noticed as I turned onto a 30
mph street that the engine just started to rev high
after leaving a stop sign, almost like the truck was
in neutral. So, I stopped fully, proceeded forward
and noticed that it would go into first (auto
transmission) and not go into second (just rev high
as I accelerated) and would not drop back down into
first. I was able to coast home. Checked and added
fluid low, about a quart, test-drove again still
same problem. Seems to be a transmission problem. If
so approx how much (new, refurbish rebuilt), what
type of transmission. Basically, what is the best
way to go from here?
Answer: Sure sounds like your
transmission is failing. The price should vary
depending upon the amount of hard pieces that may be
damaged in the transmission. Take it to a shop that
rebuilds transmissions and they can give you an
estimate.
Question: 2000 GMC
Sierra
1500 mileage: 155,000. Other than plugs and plug
wires which are all firing properly, what would
cause the diagnostic readout to come back as misfire
on cylinder 8? The vehicle runs very sluggish almost
like vacuum leak or dirty fuel filter, which have
all been tested negative. Your answer would greatly
be appreciated I am running out of ideas
Answer: Sounds like you may have
a plugged fuel injector for number 8 cylinder.
Question: 2001 GMC Sierra 4x4
mileage: 111,000. I was traveling on a bumpy dirt
road, when my truck stalled. I tried to jump it but
it wouldn't start. In troubleshooting, I have
determined it is not getting fuel. It will start if
I put a little gas in the carburetor. I suspect the
auto fuel shutoff switch but can't locate it either
in the manual or through tracing the fuel line. The
reason I suspect this is that I have had trouble
with the cutoff switch before on other vehicles.
Answer: Your vehicle is not
equipped with a fuel shut off switch. If you do some
checking, you will probably find the fuel pump has
failed.
Question: 1996 GMC Sierra
mileage: 125,000. The service manual for my 1996 GMC
Sierra tells me that my truck has 4 oxygen sensors.
They are designated: Bank 1 Sensor 1, Bank 1 Sensor
2, Bank 1 Sensor 3, and, Bank 2 Sensor 1. The manual
does not clearly indicate the location of each of
these sensors. A GMC technician tells me that the
term "Bank" refers to a particular side of the
engine - Bank 1 refers to the side with cylinder
number 1...the driver's side (as the plug wires are
numbered 1,3,5,7). You'd think it would be easy to
deduce the placement of each oxygen sensor. Here's
the problem: Only one oxygen sensor lies beneath
Bank 1. The other three are under Bank 2... two in
front and one behind the catalytic converter. My
information seems to be contradictory. Error code
P0153 tells me I need to replace Bank 2 Sensor 1.
Can you verify its location?
Answer: Somewhere along the
line, you have gotten incorrect information.
Whichever cylinder bank has 3 oxygen sensors must be
bank 1. The cylinder bank with 1 sensor is bank 2.
We would suggest changing all 4 oxygen sensors in
view of the fact you have 70,000 miles on your
vehicle. If one has failed, the others are probably
close behind. Just a little preventative maintenance
here.
Question:
1998 GMC Sierra 1500 mileage: 75,000. Sometimes
when I start the truck, the tach, speedometer,
& gear indicator light will not work. When
this happens, throttle response is extremely poor &
sluggish. Also, when shifting from reverse to
forward gear, it has a very hard shift, I also don't
think it's going into overdrive. Any help
would be greatly appreciated, Chris
Answer:
Check the ignition switch one of the contacts in the
switch may not be functioning properly.
Question:
1998 GMC Sierra 1500. I am having trouble
starting the truck on a good and hot start. It
is rough running when it starts since I did the tune
up. Thank you I hope you can help.
Answer:
During your tune-up, could it be that you installed
a brand and heat range of spark plugs other than the
one recommended by the manufacturer? Because
if you did, this could very well be your problem.
In addition, check to make sure you did not get the
spark plug wires mixed up.
Question:
2002 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 mileage: 48,000. When
driving long trips (>100 miles) the transmission
begins slipping, and gradually gets worst.
When I checked the fluid it appeared foamy, I added
trans. Fluid and the problem went away for about a
week. The trans only slips when the engine is
hot. I took the truck to the dealer and of
course, it wasn’t slipping, they replaced the fluid
and filters. Is this indicative of a
coolant leak? Thanks for your help! Rick
Answer: The problem with your
transmission fluid foaming may have been caused by a
low fluid level. When the fluid is low, air
gets into the system, which causes the foam.
In your question, you stated that the dealer
replaced the filter and fluid and we assume it was
okay after that. What you have described does
not sound like coolant leaking into the transmission
fluid. If it were, the foam would look like a
strawberry milkshake. Check the
transmission fluid once a week for several months to
monitor the fluid level.
Question:
2001 GMC Sierra 1500 4X4 mileage: 120,000. I
recently had my power window motor replaced on the
drivers side of my truck. When I got my
truck back, I noticed the window was working fine
but the power door locks were not working. The
power switches to the locks also were continuously
clicking. I had to take part of the trim
off and disconnect the power to the switch to keep
anything from shorting out. I am wondering if
someone crossed a wire or if there is another
problem with my power door locks.
Answer:
You should take your vehicle back to who ever
previously worked on it and have then check the
wiring harnesses especially the ground wires.
Question:
1999 GMC Sierra mileage? The motor will turn
over but will not fire. I have checked the
plugs for spark, but there was no spark. What
do I check next? What would I check after
that?
Answer:
Check to see if the distributor is turning over.
Check for 12 volts to the coil.
Question: 1997 GMC Sierra
1500 pickup, 97,000 miles. I have a 1997 GMC pickup
and for the last few weeks, it has been stalling out
and will not restart but if I wait a few seconds
sometimes it will start and other times, it won't. I
had it into the dealer and it didn't stall out on
them so they checked a number of things and didn't
find anything wrong; I did have the fuel filter
replaced but it’s still stalling out. What do you
think it could be? The dealer cannot seem to find
it.
Answer: Intermittent
problems are difficult to find. Some of the possible
causes are fuel pump, crank angle sensor, PCM (Power
Control Module) and ignition switch.
