Geo Metro Car Repair Questions and Answers

Question:    1995 Geo Metro 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 80,000 miles the back up lights would come on only when I would wiggle the shifter as it was in reverse gear. Now, I get no back up lights at all- even with wiggling the shifter. Please

Answer:    You need to check your reverse switch at the transmission.

Question:    1996 Geo Metro 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 120,000 miles The window has fallen out of the track of the door regulator. The car was sold to my wife with the driver font door handle removed.
I removed, lubricated and replaced the door regulator. It works fine. The problem is the window does not stay in the track. I know very little about how a regulator works. I assume the track silides along the bottom of thewindow as it is raised or lowered. There is not a rubber gasket in the glass track of the regulator or on the bottom of the window itself.

Answer:    The plastic rollers can sometimes wear out to the point where they fall out of the track. GO to dealer and get new rollers, should fix the problem. Will the glass move freely up and down in the door by hand? be sure nothing is causing it to pop out

Question:    1997 Geo Metro 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 183,00 miles For a while I Had to keep my foot on the gas to make the car start, it was sluggish but it would start and idle high because I left my foot on the gas. now it won't stay running, it will turn over then stop. now I put it in neutral put my foot on the brake and gas at the same time to get it to start. can you help

Answer:    Check the idle air control valve, EGR valve and the throttle position sensor.

Question:    1997 Geo Metro Front Wheel Drive Manual 63,000 km On the coldest day of the winter I tried to start my car, but it wouldn't turn over. I got a boost from my brother. It is running now. I'm going to have the battery replaced. It is the original battery. The problem I am having is with the heater fan. It won't work. I haven't replaced the battery yet. When the car is idling I turn on the heater switch and the engine will rev for about 5 seconds, and then idle back down. No air is blowing out of the vents. Before the battery problem it ran normally. When I replace the battery will that correct the heater problem? I had noticed before the battery problem that the car wasn`t putting out quite as much heat as usual. What should I do to get this problem fixed?

Answer:    Lets get the battery replace and for the blower motor direct power to it from the battery-battery positive to pink wire at motor and negative to black wire at motor. If it doesn't come On -the motor is defective. If okay backtrack it to the blower motor resistor and then to the blower speed selector switch.

Question Follow Up:    Thanks for the advice about the heater fan. When I replaced the battery, the heater and fan worked fine.

Answer Follow Up:    The reason behind the blower motor not coming On is that it draws a lot of current and the battery just don't have the electrical pressure to operate the blower motor.

Question:    1991 Geo Metro Front Wheel Drive Automatic 85,000 miles my alt is good, battery is good, but car won't charge. Cables are good terminals are good. No shop I've taken it too can find out why. has been doing this since 94. Alt light wont come on to say not charging. it is a three cyl made in Canada. only car we can afford, but it is leaving us stranded way to much, put car on charger twice a day, carry 3 batteries in back to go 50 miles. Please help.

Answer:    Put a voltmeter on the battery, record the reading-then start the car hit the lights and the heater record the reading, if its not over .05 to 1.5 volts from the reading before you start the car the alternator is not putting.

Question:    1996 Geo Metro 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 100,600 miles. I have low compression on two consecutive cylinders. I had a compression test done to discover this. How do I replace the head gasket and valves that are causing the low compression? Thank you.

Answer:    You may have the means to remove the cylinder head, but the valve work requires an amount of machining as dose the cylinder head as well. If you intended to do this job, you would be best advised to purchase a work shop manual and study the relevant section. Check that you have the require skill level and understanding of what has to be done. also you may find that there are tools tat you don't have which are critical to the job. Get a manual and go from there.

Question:    1998 Geo Metro 4 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 91,000 miles. I just installed a new battery a couple of days ago and now my battery light comes on in my car wonder what the problem could be

Answer:    Get a voltmeter and read the open battery voltage on the battery before you start it up-should be 12.4 volts or higher, less recharge battery. Now start it up and read battery voltage should be 13.5 - 15.5 volts with headlights and heater on. If not could be the alternator again not putting out or the battery is not taking the charge. Or the field generation from the computer

Question:    1989 Geo Metro Front Wheel Drive Manual 135,000 miles. I have an 89 geo metro we replaced the head gasket and it ran great then the 02 wire fell on to the belt I replaced the wire then the check engine light didn't go off what might be the way I can clear the codes

Answer:    Disconnect the battery for a few secs or find the cancel switch behind steering column lower trim panel and switch to the opposite position.

Question:    1993 Geo Metro 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 66,000 miles. Engine oil leaks from the bottom of the engine somewhere. It happened all of a sudden where it squirts out or gushes out. Top of the engine is clean. What could the problem be and is it easily fixed?

Answer:    Wash down, and run to check for the leak, check the very front of the engine and where the gear box bolts on, see if the leak is prominent there, check the oil pressure sender switch, also check that the oil filter is tight, another common place for a bad oil leak.

Question:    1992 Geo Metro Front Wheel Drive Automatic 127,000 miles. I have a 92 Geo Metro. It starts and idles fine. The problem is the more electrical things I turn on the engine starts to idle down and eventually die. It is fine as long as I don't turn on multiple things. If I just turn on the lights you can hear the idling go down, and then if I turn on the heater fan it makes it go down more. What could be causing this problem? Thanks Gary

Answer:    Wash down, and run to check for the leak, check the very front of the engine and where the gear box bolts on, see if the leak is prominent there, check the oil pressure sender switch, also check that the oil filter is tight, another common place for a bad oil leak.

Question:    1992 Geo Metro 2 door hatchback 1L 150,000 miles Orig. owner. When car was new it was a little hard to put into reverse. Approx. 2 years ago could not downshift from 4th gear to 3rd. I'd have to downshift from 4th to 2nd gear (leaving clutch pedal in) then shift up to 3rd. Now this is happening to 2nd gear. To downshift from 3rd to 2nd, I have to almost put it in 1st gear first before it wil go into 2nd.Any info will help...Thanx, Mark

Answer:    Time to rebuild tranny...

Question:    1. geo metro '95 3 cly, I think it is the 1L, yeah it is 2. 124000miles 3. Stick shift 4. 2 wheel drive 5. the squealing 6. slight (1 quart or less per 3 months) of oil (some burnt, no smoke, some dripped but very little) 7. front left was bumped 4 years ago by truck replaced hood and left front piece. replaced all belts. rebuilt alternator 2-3 years ago. the car runs like a champ, TONS of get up and go. it is two toned, the hood and front left are green and the rest is red, but all and all a great car. 2 months ago it started squealing. I assumed it was the belts, so I replaced the ac and alternator belt. within 1 week it was squealing again. I took off both belts, ran the car and no squeal. then the ac belt, no squeal. then off with ac on with alternator belt, squeal. so it was the belt, wow that was fast, I got a new belt to replace it and I noticed they looked EXACTLY the same. no glazing, no wear. I re placed it again, this time with the belt treated. one week, squealing. this last time I put it on it start squealing within an hour or two. some one told me the pulleys must be off, but they look straight, and there is no extra clean part on the pulleys or excess wear on the belt. I am at a loss. I can get photos of what ever you guys need to solve this. I just want my dear sweet metro back, she has been so good to me.

Answer:    Next time it squeals, lightly spray water on the belt, if the noise continues, use a homemade stethoscope to narrow it down. Using a long screwdriver, place the tip on the alternator and the other end up to your ear. You can hear the differences of roughness among the various pulled components to track down the offender.

Question:    Hi, I have a Geo Metro 1997 manual transmission 1.3 liters engine, the problem is that whenever I start it it doesn't want to accelerate, and while on a flat it will work as normal but as soon as I try to make an incline it just dies down and looses power even with my feet on the gas I engage park brake and take my feet off the gas and start over it revs ok and you feel the power, but as soon as you place it in first gear and try to move off it dies off again can you help thanks

Answer:    I know this sounds crazy and goes back to the days before fuel pumps on cars, but consider that the fuel flow is not sufficient on the vehicle. There is gas but the pressure is less than it needs and the climbing of the hill etc works against the problem and solely depends on the pump to get the fuel to the injectors. I would start with a fuel filter replacement. If that does not help, I would get a fuel pressure check on the car. It could be a weak fuel pump.
