MORE: Ford LTD Repair Questions

Question: 1991 Ford LTD Crown Vic mileage: 142,000.  I think I have a bad axle bearing on the driver's side rear.  I heard a grinding noise and promptly parked the car.  Do I need special tools to replace the bearing?  Can I tell for sure the bearing is bad without removing it?

Answer: Special tools are required to replace the axle bearing.  To tell for sure if the bearing is bad, you must remove the axle and examine the bearing.

Question:  1990 Ford LTD  mileage: 147,000.  As you can see from the above information I have an "older" model car.  I've had it a few months, but it hasn't been on the road until recently, reason being I was under age when I bought it, didn't have a driver's license until about a month ago. So all the time I have had it, it has only been started and run up and down our driveway.  About three weeks ago I put it on the road, it did fine until about a week ago.  My mother and I were started on a short trip to a nearby town and on the way up this stretch of hill, it tried to smother out and quit running.  The day before I drove it up a secondary highway, very hilly terrain but had no trouble what so ever.  Before we hit the hill, we traveled all flat highways without and problem ran like a top.  After we finally made it to the top of the hill, we decided we would turn around and go back home.  Again, it ran like a top.  Now, it doesn't want to run much at all, it'll run a little way then die, start it up-it'll run a little way and die again.  I do not feel that it is anything serious, but it sure aggravating, because I do not know where to start.  I think it may be in the firing but I am not sure. It backfires sometimes. Automatic transmission if that matters.  The car was a one owner, and my grandfather is acquainted with previous owner. I did not buy the car directly from him but from a local used car dealer in my area. My grandfather talked with the original owner about the condition of the car and was told it was in pretty good shape for the model.  It has a great body for the model; it was a good buy considering I did not have a lot of money to spend.  Thanks in advance, for any help you may be able to give me.

Answer:  Ford in the late 1970's had a lot of trouble with their ignition module.  It is a four inch square box usually located on the left fender-well.  Replacing it would probably fix your problem.

Question:  1989 Ford LTD wagon mileage: 78,243.  Sugar was put in my gas tank!  I have the tank cleaned and the fuel lines from the carburetor back including a new filter.  Do I have to rebuild the carburetor or will the new fuel flush that out?

Answer: You may not need to rebuild the carburetor. Just remove it and turn it upside down to drain the gas out.

Question:  1989 Ford Ltd mileage: 171,000.  Could you please tell me the spark plug gaps for this car as I live in Scotland and it is hard to get info up here.

Answer:  Usually somewhere on the engine or in the engine compartment, there is a sticker with the engine specifications.  The spark plug gap should be included.  If not .032 or an inch should be close.

Question:  1966 Ford LTD mileage: 60,000.  I want to replace the seals in my (automatic C6) transmission, but I'm a beginning mechanic and don't know how to go about it. I'm looking for step by step instructions or some kind of a repair manual, like Haynes or Chilton's. My local parts place says they can't order manuals back to 1966. Any idea on where I can find information, or can you give me the ABC's?

Answer:  Removing and reassembling an automatic transmission is a big job for a beginning mechanic. You may be able to find old repair manuals Click here to find out more
