Ford Festiva Car Repair Questions and Answers

Question:  1989 Ford Festiva mileage: 120,000.  My car is making a screeching noise when I start it and until it, gets warmed up and I rev. the engine in the mornings.  Does this sound like a belt problem?  I have ordered the repair manual.  Would this be something I can fix not knowing anything about cars?

Answer:  Tightening the belt may fix your problem.  However, if the belt has been slipping for a while, it probably has glazed the bottom side of the belt and if this is the case, the belt should be replaced.

Question:  1989 Ford Festiva  mileage: 125,000.  The car has terrible drivability problems, it acts like timing not advancing.  It is hard starting, severe engine cut out at almost all rpm and load, and has low power except when over 3500 rpm and full throttle when warm, then runs like normal.  Only 22.5 mpg, usually high 30s.  I have replaced: coil, ignition wires, cap/rotor, entire distributor with ignition module twice, sparkplugs, fuel pump (helped a little), swapped out carburetor from salvage yard with same mileage (no difference, except idle a little too high now), done propane test for vacuum leaks (none found), replaced many of the vacuum lines on the carburetor (very careful to replace exactly), checked the high altitude compensator but works fine according to Haynes manual, checked/reset timing to 0 TDC, fuel filter, air filter.  The problem has slowly gotten worse over course of a year.  I cannot drive now due to lack of power and won't rev due to constant cut out.  I don't have access to trouble codes. Plugs a little white, running lean I think.  Manual transmission, I don't have any hunches left.  It's been a very good car since new except for this one problem I cannot figure out. Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Answer:  We think that the timing belt may have jumped a tooth, or perhaps the catalytic converter might be plugged, or you might have low compression in the engine.

Question:  1988 Ford Festiva mileage: 80,000.  I'm having trouble figuring out the spout for adding more gear oil/transmission fluid into my 88' Ford Festiva with manual transmission. I accidentally drained the gear oil/transmission fluid while trying to change the engine oil on my car.

Answer: The transmission is filled through the speedometer gear housing.

Question:  1991 Ford Festiva mileage: 120,000.  The right real wheel was loose on car. Upon investigation, several roller bearings are missing. I cannot get this wheel off of the axle.  Is there some "trick" that I'm not aware of, or do you think the remaining bearings have "welded" themselves to the axle?

Answer:  From what you describe, yes, the bearings have probably "welded" to the axle. We have found that a "slide hammer" works quite well to remove the hub.
