MORE: Ford Crown Victoria Repair Questions

Question: 1997 Ford Crown Victoria mileage 101500:  The check engine light keeps coming on about three weeks after the codes have been reset. The codes indicate that bank 1, or bank 2, or both are running lean. I have changed all the O2 sensors, fuel filter, air filter, cleaned then swapped MAF with a friend's car to try and ran three bottles of cleaner before changing sensors. I notice no performance change in the vehicle. I average 25 to 26 mpg on the highway. After looking at numerous websites and everything that people have replaced I can find no exact answer to this problem. Can you please help? I have been servicing my cars for years and know about trouble codes as they are only general in nature.

Answer: Check the fuel injectors for flow pattern and volume. You probably have several that are malfunctioning, you should replace them all to be safe.

Question: 1992 Crown Victoria mileage 100,000.  The battery light comes on and lights dim. The alternator was tested and it appears to be ok. Could something else such as a wire be causing the problem? I could replace the alternator to see if this corrects the problem, but if there is something less expensive to check first, I would rather try that.

Answer: You said that you had the alternator tested but was it tested for a failing diode rather that just for voltage output. A failing diode would cause the problem you described.

Question: 1986 Ford Crown Victoria mileage: 115000.  The problem is that the car does not start in the rain. I had this checked out by a professional, and he thought it was the distributor cap and plugs/wires (to the best of my understanding). He replaced all of these and still it does not start. I was wondering if it could be anything else that could be repaired or replaced. The car is no longer worth much, but it is a good car and I would like to get it running again. The cheaper the solution the better.

Answer: When your car will not start here are some things to have checked: 1. Check for ignition spark at spark plugs, 2. Check for fuel pressure, 3. Scan P.C.M. (computer) for fault or error codes. The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components.

Question: 1992 Ford Crown Victoria mileage: 90,000. The car won't start. The starter's clicking but engine won't turn over. New battery, fender wall celluloid. I replace the old starter with a new one. It is still just clicking. Actual production model is November 1991, Could this be an ignition module problem?

Answer: From what you have described and assuming the replacement starter is not faulty and the new battery is fully charged, it appears that your motor may be seized. The ignition module would not keep your car from cranking.

Question: 1992 Ford Crown Victoria mileage: 155,000. For some reason my fuel pump won't shut off when the car is off. I engage and disengage fuel pump switch in the trunk before and after every use. I changed the fuel pump relay. The fuel pump seems to work fine when it's on. Sometimes the engine won't start after I engage the pump switch. (Even if the car had been running for a while and I hand not disengaged the switch) Somehow, somewhere the pump is wired to stay on. I am a little suspicious of the key cylinder. I can pull out the Key at any point. Or, could it be the pump switch? Any Recommendations?

Answer: The ECC (computer) relay is probably hanging up and needs to be replaced.
