MORE: Ford Aspire Repair Questions

Question: 1995 Ford Aspire, mileage: 97,845.  My car will turn like it will crank but it doesn't. The dealer says it is the distributor and that it costs about $600 to order and $800 to fix. Is there a better deal on a distributor for this kind of car or am I sunk.

Answer: Check www.eautopartstore.com for a rebuilt unit or brand new unit.

Question: 1994 Ford Aspire, mileage: 135,000.  I had the check engine light stay on. The codes were read and the mechanic said it was a camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction What does the camshaft sensor do? What will happen if I don't change the sensor?

Answer: The camshaft sensor tells the engine control computer the position of the camshaft. If the sensor is failing, we suggest replacing it.

Question: 1993 Ford Aspire, mileage: 155,000. The car has started to ping very badly with even moderate acceleration. Sparks seem fine, timing is perfect but, I believe it is the distributor.  Is there a particular part of the distributor, which would be causing the majority of the problem, or something, which I can replace myself? If not I'll have to get it overhauled, but that's pricey. Thanks.

Answer: Check the ignition timing at idle and also at 1000 RPM, 1500 RPM, 2000 RPM and 2500 RPM. Note the timing advance for proper operation, you should have approximately twenty degrees advance between idle and 2500 RPM. Also, if your engine is equipped with an EGR valve, it should be closed at idle and start to open as the RPM increases.
